S: To kill a mockingbird
FC: To Kill a Mockingbird
Setting & Historical Context | Maycomb was an old town, but it was a tired old town when I first knew it(Lee6). | Maycomb was maybe a rundown place. | In rainy weather the streets turn red slop, grass on the sidewalk, court house sagged in the square(Lee6). | Maybe the community didn't take care of their town. | Atticus was related by blood or marriage to nearly every family in the town(Lee6). | Everyone Knew each other around town.
Understanding the context of the setting is so important because it could tell you maybe the mood of the story. Also the setting could tell the reader how people live , or maybe even help the reader understand the situation a little clearer, such as the racism instead this story would be a lot different if it didn't take place in the south or maybe even a different year.
The Scottsbro boys were accused of raping two white women. The women even said that they made it up, but the jury decided to still say they were guilty. | Emmet Till was 14 years old black boy that was killed for saying something to a white women that some white people didn't necessarily like. So he was killed.
Real World Events | TKaM Events | The Scottsboro boys were accused of raping white women | Scottsboro boys lawyer believe believe that they were innocent. | The girls that accused the Scottsboro of rape mad the story up. | A black man was accused of raping a white women | Atticus believe that the black man he was defending was innocent. | Mayella Ewell made up her story to protect herself.
Point Of View | First person | Atticus told me on his way to town this morning. Tell you the truth, I'd like to've been with you. | The Narrator is scout. (Jean Louise)
Harper Lee chose to tell the story from the perspective from a young girl, because everyone is innocent.
Point of view | I chose to do the scene when Mayella is telling her side of the story. This will be written in Atticus's point of view. Mayella said something behind her hands. "Whats that?" asked the judge. "Him", she sobbed, and pointed at me. Mr. Finch? "Don't want him doin' me like he done papa, tryin to make him out left handed. "Mr. Finch has no idea of scaring you", judge Taylor growled, and if he did, I'm here to stop him. I waited till Mayella was done sobbing and making the judge feel sorry for her. Then Mayella gave me one terrified glance, and I continue with the case. As I asked her personal questions about her father, Mayella started to shut down. She seemed as if I was attacking or making fun of her. I began to feel sick to my stomach for what I have done to make tell the truth. It was hard for me to do this, because we all knew who had done this to her.
Conflicts | When Mr. Ewell spit in Atticus's face. | When Calpurnia & Lula had a conflict about bring white children to a black church. | Tom Robinson & Mayellea Ewell when Mayella tried to mess with Tom Robinson | Mans Vs. Man. | Mans Vs. Man | Man Vs. Man
Atticus & Mr. Ewell | This conflict in the story didn't really change a character. This situation made Jem and Scout worried. | Calpurnia,Lula, Jem, and scout | Jem and Scout didn't really know how bad racism was. | Jem and Scout know how things actually are in Maycomb. | Tom Robinson & Mayella Ewell | Mayella was Embarrassed by her actions. Tom was scared because he knew he eould be guilty as a black man. | Mayella was lonely. Tom was just trying to help Mayell Ewell.
Characterization | Dynamic Character | Jem | Jem's attitude changes through out the story. | Scout | Shes not be to much of a girly girl. she loves hanging out with her brother. | She start to become more lady like. | He likes to keep to himself.
Static Character | Atticus | Hes a clam person and treats everyone equal. | Atticus believes it wasn't right to kill an innocent black man. | Calpurnia | She likes a great influence, and also treats everyone equal. | Calpurnia believed we all should be equal.
Symbols | The significance of the title to kill a mocking bird is to help the reader understand the story. In the story it talks about a mockingbird represents innocence and you shouldn't harm a innocent creature. The mockingbird symbolizes Tom Robinson because he was innocent just like a mockingbird, but Tom was killed as a innocent man. fro someone else's evil ways.
Boo Radley | In the story they said mockingbirds don't bother you so you shouldn't bother it. Boo Radley is kind of like a Mockingbird, because people blamed him when he was innocent. | Tom Robinson | Tom Robinson could be considered a mockingbir, because a mockingbird represents innocence, and in this story Tom was innocent. | Scout | Scout Finch could be considered a mockingbird because in the story they talked about how innocent a mockingbird is and scout is innocent like a mockingbird.
Themes | Don't blame someone for your faults. | "Who is he?" "Mayella pointed to Tom Robinson. | The quote proves my theme because she blamed a black man to protect herself. | This happens in the real world because everyday some gets blamed for something they didn't do.
Racism needs to stop, and people should over come racism. | "I mean is he good to you, is he easy to get along with?" "He does tolerable, Except when". | This quote helps prove my theme because of racism they put a innocent black man in jail, but instead molester & abusive man go. | Sometimes in the real world there are still some serious racism, and innocent people are treated unfairly.
Personal Reflection | This book taught a lot of things. It talked about how cruel people can be to each other just to protect themselves. My favorite part of the book was when Calpurnia took Scout and Jem to a black church. This part showed the reader that not all white people were cruel, and not all black people feared whites. Another reason why I liked this part because it showed a lot of courage and kindness some people had for one another. This book was great entertainment and it also gives you great should treat each other. | This book taught a lot of things.
