 About Me
I am Jean Louise Finch. Jem and Atticus call me Scout. I am six years old. This summer has been pretty exciting so far. There's a new boy that comes to town every summer. His name is Charles Baker Harris, but Jem says that's far too big of a name for him, so we just call him Dill. We all live in old Maycomb County. I like living here 'cause everyone knows each other and lots of people are real friendly. It gets kinda boring though. Days always seem longer in Maycomb. I live in a little house with Atticus and Jema and Cal.
Calpurina is a real nice lady who kinda lives with us. She's been coming to our house since before I can | remember to help cook anc clean. Jem and I call her Cal and Cal is like a mom to me and Jem. I had a mom once but she died when I was a baby. Cal teaches me to behave and she taught me to see things from other points of views. I don't know what I'd do without Cal.
My brother's name is Jeremy Atticus Finch, but I think that's far too long of a name for him so I just call him jJem for short. He's four years older than me but we still get along well. Most days, Jem and I pass the Radley PLace on the way to school and when we get home, sometimes we'll read together or play outsdie. Summers are great because we don't ahve school and we can just sit around together like most brothers and sisters do.
The other night, atticus was guarding the courthouse and I stepped itno the brawl when the mob started to form. I was yelling at the top of my lungs and demanded that Mr. Cunningham | go away. Cal says that the public doesn't listen to reason. I don't get how people can be so evil. Mr. Cunningham was makin' me so mad that I decided that I was gonna beat up Walter Cunningham at school the next day. Atticus says not to touch him and to hold back my emotions. He says that it's a sin to kill a mockingbird 'cause they don't do anything but make music for us. I never really understood that.
Once Mrs. Dubose said that Atticus was a no-good Nigger Lover. Jem got real mad at her and he ripped up all the flowers in her garden. I guess the only punishment | she could think of was to have him go over to her house everyday and read to her. I thought it was a real dumb idea to go over there to just read, but after she died, Atticus said that we were good distractions for her not to take her morphine. It may have eased her pain but she didn't want to die as an addict to morphine. Even thoug hMrs. Dubose was a real mean lady, I'mglad that I could help her overcome her struggle.
Jem and I pass the Radley Place everyday comin’ home from school. It has this oak tree with a crevice and once Jem saw somethin’ inside so we peeked in it. Jem pulled out two figurenes. They were carved like children. One boy and one girl. Jem says that it was us. I didn’t get it. Why would there be little sculptures of mea nd jem in a tree outside Boo Radley’s house? Old Mr. Radley came out and filled the hole with concrete. The tree looked healthy so I don’t know why he’d want to fill it up.
Miss Maudie Atkinson is one of the nicest ladies in town. She has a really pretty garden in her front yard. Miss Maudie be out there everyday makin sure it’s lookin' its best. One day, her house burned down. It was a real horror. Atticus made Jem and me stand way back. By the end of the night, I had a blanket on and I don’t remember bringin’ one. It’s scratchy but real nice and warm. I wonder who brought it to me. It was probably just one of the neighbors.
I think there's just one kind of folks. Folks.
