FC: Transitions A Bicycle Adventure Summer 2010
1: The adventure begins in June, 2010. Andrea and Alex have finished degree work at Iowa State. Andrea will begin a job in the fall and Alex will go to graduate school at North Caroline State. The summer of 2010 seems like the perfect time for a cross country bicycle trip. They pack up all the bikes and take the train to Portland. Dick flies out and rents a van. They stay with a friend David in Portland. The next morning David drives the riders and all their equipment to Seaside, Oregon to begin the ride. They will follow the Lewis and Clark trail using Adventure Cycling maps of the northern tier of the United States. | Posing in front of the Lewis and Clark statue.
2: The first day is rainy and cold. With all the gear loaded, the riders head east. The sign is an ominous symbol of things to come.
3: The route crosses and follows the majestic Columbia River. Disaster strikes on a long downhill when Andrea loses control and flips her bike on the road. An ambulance is called to take Andrea to St. John's Hospital in Long View, WA. Fortunately, there are no major injuries. The bike is miraculously undamaged. The next morning the riders decide to continue the ride. They pedal 60 miles to Portland and stay in a hotel so the abrasions can be cleaned easier.

8: Riding through Lolo Pass from Idaho to Montana was a long day. They enjoyed the ghost town days in Garnet. The riders had their picture taken for the wall at Adventure Cycling in Missoula.

11: Riding through North Dakota to Williston, where Dick leaves to head back to Iowa. Andrea celebrates her 25th birthday in South Dakota.
14: Andrea and Alex make a special friend in South Dakota-Rick. He takes them kayaking on the Missouri River. And at last they make it to Iowa and a welcome from Alex's parents in Sioux City. RAGBRAI!

18: Iroquois, Illinois proved to be the most bicycle friendly community on the trip. The mayor drove out to meet the riders and escorted them into town. They were provided with a place to stay, food and a shower! In Prophetstown they were interviewed by the newspaper. | Riding the Hennepin canal trail in Illinois

20: The ride ended in Danville, Kentucky when the couple hit high heat and steep hills. They had ridden 3522 miles in 54 days. | At a cafe, a local resident took an interest in their story and helped them rent a car big enough to haul the bikes. They stayed in Blacksburg, VA with friend, Jeff, before heading for Raleigh, North Carolina to start work and school.
