Unexpected | By: Chloe Lawrence | This book is dedicated to Kali Sarver, Bri Hanover, Lily Wolff, and Kathy Garcia.

It was an ordinary Halloween evening with young children dressed as fantasy characters and ghosts alike. There were ordinary houses lit up with ordinary jack-o-lanterns. However, 9 year old Darcy was about to experience something that was far beyond ordinary...

In the small neighborhood of Bendy Willow, the legendary Halloween parade was only a few hours away from starting in the town square and there was still candy needed to be trick or treated for. Darcy, like every other child was eager to get her hands on the sweets that awaited her.

While waiting for the fun of the parade begin, Darcy met up with her friends. She examined their costumes before stating,"Oh please! Those costumes are ridiculous! Mine is the best!" Her friends just rolled their eyes. Before any of the adults could warn the children not to go in the spooky forest, the group of costumed children were well on their way and happily trick or treating.

It wasn't long before the children had filled up their bags with sweets and were bored of ringing door bells for candy. It was at this moment that the feisty Darcy proposed a race...

"I think we should have a race to the town square and whoever gets there first gets all of the candy! Although you all probably won't have a chance since I know all of the shortcuts and this town." | The small girl's friend, Rachel, looked at her in disbelief. "Darcy if you think I'm going to run all the to town square, you're crazy!"

By the time Rachel finished her sentence, the other children were already forming a start line. She rushed to her place in line just in time to hear Darcy yell,"Ready, set, go!"

Being the sly young thing that she was, Darcy decided to be sneaky and take a short cut.

"If I go through here, I'll be at the town square in no time!" Little did she know that she was running right into the spooky forest that the adults thought they warned the children about.

In no time at all, Darcy was unmistakably lost. She looked every which way, but everything looked the same. | As she was scrambling through the woods, she ran straight into the haggard young witch, Rosie.

The lonely witch looked at Darcy. She sadly asked,"Are you lost? You must be, no one ever comes to visit me..."

Darcy just looked at Rosie and laughed. "Well obviously no one comes to visit you! You're in a spooky forest where no kid ever wanders. Also, you look like a freak!" | When Rosie began to cry, Darcy was puzzled.

Rosie quietly said,"I don't want to be in the forest...It's the only place I can go where people don't make fun of me. The reason I'm here is because my friends made fun of me for being different."

Darcy didn't know what to say! "Rosie, I had no idea! I'm so sorry!"

Rosie was silent for a few minutes. Then she proposed that Darcy should go to town square to meet up with her friends. Darcy felt bad for being rude to Rosie, so she invited her along.

When Darcy found her friends she was very excited. "Hey guys! I guess I lost the race....but I found a new friend, Rosie!" | The young kids all greeted Rosie, but soon went back to enjoying the parade.

Darcy spent most of the parade talking to Rosie about why she fled to the forest.

The group of dressed up kids just stared at the two girls and laughed. They made fun of Darcy for talking to Rosie, who they referred to as a freak.

While Rosie was watching the taunting, she began to feel bad for Darcy and decided to stick up for her.

Since Rosie was a witch, she made mysterious things happen at the parade. Darcy's friends had no idea what was going on!

Just as the kids were about to run away, Rosie stopped them in their tracks. "How dare you make fun of Darcy! She was just trying to be nice to me, and you guys were all laughing at her for making a new friend!"

After Darcy's so called "friends," ran away, Darcy was thanking Rosie for sticking up for her.

Rosie smiled,"Oh it was no trouble at all! I know what it's like to be made fun of...I wish there was someone to stick up for me when I was made fun of!"

Darcy went with Rosie back to the forest and they talked about what their lives were like and ate the candy they both collected.

Darcy didn't realize how late it had gotten! Her parents would be mad if she came home any later.

When Darcy told Rosie she had to go, Rosie was upset.

Darcy smiled at Rosie. "Don't worry! I'll come back to visit whenever I can!"

From then on, Darcy visited Rosie every day. | It was easy to see that the two girls were the best of friends!
