FC: Through Good Times and Bad Times

Today, dad came home sooner than ever. When he got here he was driving this strange thing that i’ve never seen before. He didn't have the horse with him. Later, a man came and installed some new things around the house. When he was finished he told us that to turn it on we had to turn the black knob on the lamp. He also said he had presents and pulled out something that had knobs and numbers on it. Once it got turned on it was telling the local news. Wow, this is exciting!

When prohibition was finally over the second they announced it all I heard and saw were people running into stores with alcohol. Now people are getting arrested every day and most of the time it has something to do with alcohol. Everywhere you go there is at least one man with a stinky beer breath. But, it has changed in a good way also. There are no bootleggers and gangs running around trying to get money illegally. Now they have the right to sell alcohol. Ending prohibition has caused bad and good changes.

This whole week mom and dad have been arguing about moving to the city. Mom doesn't want to leave her friends and family, but dad says they have better jobs and opportunities in the North and Midwest. They both agreed that it would be better because of the discrimination in the South. Today, we rode a train to the city. After staying for a week, we still faced discrimination but not as much as in the south. My parents often went to speakeasies to cope with the discrimination and to hear some good talents.

Today as I was walking down the street I heard some beautiful sounds coming from around the block. So I walked over, when I got there two men were playing some instruments and singing something called “The Blues.” People there told me the two men names were Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington. There was also a man painting something, his name was Jacob Lawrence. When I got home I asked my dad why were they doing that, he said it was called the “Harlem Renaissance.” It was a time when African Americans could express themselves through different types of art.

Today father came home with some disturbing news. He had just found out that he lost his job today. He said that he had money saved up in the bank but the bank lost all of it. How will we survive with no income? Rent is due in a week, how will father make money in enough time to pay it? My baby sister Lindsey is almost out of diapers. God please work something out for my family!
