32: Saturday May 21, 2011 We hailed a cab from the train station to our apartment, but still had a bit of a walk over cobblestone streets with those awful bags. We finally found our apartment, and then faced 62 steps (counting steps again!) to the apartment door. Luckily, the apartment has air conditioning, a welcome relief. It is located just a couple of blocks from the Pantheon and the Bernini sculpture of the Elephant. We unpacked and walked to a grocery store and ATM machine to acquire much needed food and euros. We also stopped at a nearby outdoor pizzeria, to finally have a very late lunch or perhaps, an early dinner. Donna, John and I went back out later to sample our first gelatoes in Rome. Donna and I returned to the apartment and John wandered around taking pictures and finding Trevi Fountain and the Spanish steps before calling it a night. Sunday May 22, 2011 We left the apatment at 9:45am and walked (the long way round) to the Palentine Hill, the Forum and the Colosseum. We purchased a combo ticket for12 euros each. It was very hot and quite crowded. We did get separated while touring the Colosseum, but our cell phones got us reconnected! We returned to the area around the Pantheon and found a very nice pizzeria, Hostaria De'Pastini Pizzeria. A light rain started so we were quickly ushered inside and enjoyed shrimp risotto, shrimp scampi, and a bottle of Chianti Classico. Back to the apartment for showers. John, Donna and I headed out

33: again and walked to Piazza Nervonna and then to Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps, and then to Rick Steve's favorite gelato shop in Rome. Monday May 23, 2011 This is our last full day in Rome. We left the aparmtnet at 10:20 am and walked to the Victor Emmanuel Monument. We were directed up 5 flights of stairs and then rode the glass elevator to the top of the building, where there is a beautiful view of all of Rome and the surrounding countryside. We found an outdoor cafe to enjoy pizza and a glass of Chianti, and then hopped on a bus to Vatican City. We toured St. Peter's Cathedral and waited out a rather loud thunderstorm, therefore missing the opportunity to tour the Sistine Chapel. We did walk back over the bridge crossing the Tiber. The storm had cooled the temperatures considerably, and it was a very pleasant walk back to the apartment for showers and packing and skyping with Alicia, and, except for Bill, back out hoping to find some gifts and of course gelatoes. Tuesday May 24, 2011 The taxi picked us up at the corner by our apartment at 7:25am. The cab driver dropped us off at the wrong termnal at the airport, but we were able to catch a shuttle bus to the correct one. We left about 45 minutes late but got to Boston at 2:30pm EST in plenty of time to make our connecting flights to Memphis and Boston.
