FC: Young Giver | By:Jill Rosenblum

Dedication To my young readers and my loving Mom and Dad

Chapter 1- | "Whoo hoo," I blurted in excitement!! Today was the annual Color War Festival held in our community. My sister Barbra and my younger brother Henry and I were always so excited when this day came around! I chose my outfit today which was always a white buttoned shirt with white khakis for this festival. During the festival the whole community would come out and celebrate our freedom. We would throw colored chalk onto each other and have the colors be marked onto our whites to be shown off the next day. It was always fun when someone from the community brought a glow in the dark or neon chalk. I grabbed a breakfast grain and scooted out the door to catch up to my family. My mom Jane and my dad David bought awesome colors this year! Green, red, and oranges, my favorite colors.

Once the festival started we all ran around the streets. "I"m gonna get you," Barbra said frantically! "No, I'm gonna kill you!" screamed Henry. What we didn't notice is that our family was all around a huge parking lot of bikes. Without noticing it we were splashing colors all over the new 2501 models. "Uh.... Barbra.... Charles," I said in a troubled tone. We all turned are heads at the same time! "I think mommy's going to be mad," Henry said shaking. "Who dares do this mess of chalks?" said a mysterious voice. "I said who dares do this?" "Uh, Lance,Barbra and Henry," I said. "Silence Immortals!" the spirit said. "Because you have done such a crime of color I will take away your WHOlE town's memories of holiday and color, and put it into the wisest person known to man, myself ! I woke up seeing black and white having unknown thoughts of any festival. It was not until later that I figured out I did this !

Chapter 2- | After this striking event that none of the people in the community had known about until later, we were all clueless. We all went about our day now seeing black and white and having no idea of a holiday. Not knowing I caused this!! At the other side of the world there was a lot of commotion. A lot of nuclear bombs and missiles were being shot around Europe and a nearby nation called Nation19. We were Nation21. Many of our men had gone to the nearby nations to help protect the young and old civilians. They had been killed in battle over oil and our president, the 290th had not liked this. Every night we would hear about the killed soldiers and mourn for their families. That Thursday night after the 4th learning stage at school, I had trouble sleeping. I had night sweats and some terribly deep dreams about family and death. That next morning my bed was covered in sweat.

On Friday, my family and all the others had been demanded by the government to meet up at 4:00 pm at town hall, which we did. During the meeting they said all children younger than the age of 13 were allowed to play on the center playground. So Barbra, Henry and I played until a quarter past 5:00pm. They then called all kids back in to hear the last "boring" things they always talked about. But this time it was different!! The president had become the "controller." He was told by the spirit to erase more memories. He started shooting everyone's head with this goo, erasing the memories of seasons, war and the other nations to prevent craziness in the town and to prevent us from harm. I managed to not get shot!

Chapter-3 | I knew what seasons, war and other nations were. Dragging them day in and day out season after season, wondering why I wasn't shot? I wrote about the problem thinking I would become happy again, but I didn't. In April 2502 a lot of couples were having triplets or even sextuplets. There were no birthdays now so everyone would get the same thing at the same time. In Decembers all the age groups would get the same supplies in each age group so no jealously would occur. The community had kept growing and growing, and the government could not keep up so they started this new thing called "releasing." It is a set of rules where each family could only have two children and no identical. So a Caretaker would give a no pain shot to the head or thigh and send them to sleep for ever. The government had learned from history about the guillotine in the 1800s and

didn't want to cause the citizens pain. Now new children were given birth parents and then taken to families as their children. Everyone was assigned jobs and there was no choice anymore. My family had 3 children so I was nervous. For the original families that had their own kids, one was taken away each day if they had more than two. Today was our day!!! I heard the intercom turn on. "Hello family unit 1902348," said a public worker. "If you hear your name please say your regards and locate to Town Hall." "Lance... Lance please come to Town Hall please, thank you." I froze, trying to process why I was chosen. I always got the best grades and obeyed the most at home. Until I realized they knew I wasn't shot! I tried to hold back the tears while saying good bye. I could tell my parents were terrified so I tried to comfort them.

"It will be okay," I said. At Town Hall they told me they knew about the chalk and not being shot. They strapped me down and the president personally was the person to shoot me and the rest of the people. He told me that I could have done better and that I shouldn't... The world went blurry like spaghetti, and the colors came back for one second. The last thing he said was, "Now remember there is nothing called war." And it went blank.
