1: This book is dedicated to the orangutans of Borneo and Sumatra who have lost their forest homes. | 1

2: I remember when I was young my mom protected me. | 2

3: 3

4: During the day, she taught me how to climb the tallest trees. | 4

5: 5

6: Each night, I helped her fold the leafiest branches to make our sleeping nest. I was happy. | 6

7: 7

8: Now that I'm older, I no longer live with my mom. She has my baby brother to worry about and I can look after myself. I've even invented a way to collect honey although the bees don't like it. | 8

10: But, I'm beginning to realize that I have more to worry about than finding food. Now, men come to the forest with loud chainsaws to cut down trees. They float the logs down the river. Sometimes, during the dry season the air fills with smoke. If I climb the tallest tree I can see the forest burning. I no longer feel safe. | 10

12: I hope though that one day people will remember when they loved the forest. Maybe then the trees will grow back… | 12

14: and I can raise my children in a home where they feel as protected as I did when I was young. | 14

16: Five Ways You Can Help Orangutans Like Me: - Learn more about orangutans and their conservation needs at your local library. Ask your teacher to read this story to your class. - Visit your local zoo with your friends and family and ask the keepers how zoos help orangutans and other great apes. - Organize a fund raising event, like a bake sale, with your classmates and donate your profits to support GRASP (The Great Apes Survival Partnership). http://www.unep.org/grasp/ - Take science classes and grow up to be a Conservation Biologist. | 16
