FC: Arthropods | Melissa Lomas Honors Biology Ms. Iliana Olvera Mayo 2, 2012
Arthropods consist of invertebrate animals of the phylum Arthropoda, including the insects, crustaceans, arachnids, and myriapods, that are characterized by a tough exoskeleton and a segmented body that is joined by appendages are articulated in pairs. The characteristics that identify and arthropods are that they have specialized mouth parts, jointed legs, compound eyes, segmented body and a really tough exoskeleton. Most of the aquatic arthropods breathe through featherlike gills. | Arthropods
The crustaceans, such as lobsters, crabs, shrimps, crayfishes and barnacles, typically they have two pairs of antennae, two or three body sections and chewing mouthparts called mandibles.
Chelicerates, includes spiders, scorpions, and horseshoe crab. Their mouthparts are called chelicerae and they have two body sections, and all have four pairs of walking legs, except for the horseshoe crabs that have 5 walking legs.
The Myriapods consist of centipedes, and millipedes and their relatives and have many body segments, each bearing one or two pairs of legs
Trilobites are a well-known fossil group of extinct marine arthropods that form the class Trilobita | The first appearance of trilobites in the fossil record defines the base of the Atdabanian stage of the Early Cambrian period (526 million years ago), and they flourished throughout the lower Paleozoic era before beginning a drawn-out decline to extinction when, during the Devonian, almost all trilobite orders, with the sole exception of Proetida, died out.
Arthropods can cause various diseases like Rocky mountain fever, encephalitis, methicilin which is a skin disease, west nile virus, and the most known is dengue, cause by mosquitoe bites.
