Landforms are natural shapes, or features, on Earth's Surface. | Waterways include lakes, rivers, and oceans.

Some parts of Earth's Surface are low areas. A valley is a lowland area between higher lands such as mountains. A canyon is a deep valley with steep sides.

Lakes are an inland body of water usually of considerable size.

A volcano is an opening in Earth's surface from which lava flows.

The Devil's Tower was once lava inside a volcano. Wind and rain have worn away the volcano that was around it.

Most of the water on Earth is found in the oceans. This water is salt water. | If you could put all the water on Earth into 100 buckets, 97 buckets would hold salt water.

Indian Ocean | Arctic Ocean | Pacific Ocean | Atlantic Ocean

A river is a large natural stream of water emptying into an ocean, lake, or larger body of water. | Rivers can wear away rock to form valleys.

Soil can be dropped at the mouth of a river to form a delta. A delta is a piece of land that forms at the mouth of a river. Deltas are often shaped like triangles.

A plain is a flat area on Earth's surface. | The middle of the United States is a large plain.

A plateau is a flat area higher than the land around it. | They look like tables made from rock.

Native Americans built homes in the rocky cliffs hundreds of years ago.

A glacier is a huge sheet of ice that slowly moves downhill. | Most glaciers are valley glaciers.

An island is surrounded by water. | The state of Hawaii is a group of islands.

A barrier island is a thin island near a coast. | Barrier Islands can form when sand in moving water is dropped near the shore.

Any inlet of the ocean bordering on land and partly surrounded by land is a bay.

A peninsula is an area of land which projects out from a larger land mass and is almost surrounded by water.

Without water there could be no life on Earth. Plants and animals need water to live. So do people. Water is important to Earth's environment.
