4: Fossils are preserved remains of plants and animals from the past. The fossil pictured here is petrified wood.
5: They can be found in rocks thousands of years after the plant or animal has died. this fossil is a trilobite in rock from long ago.
6: Part 2 Kinds of fossils
7: Mold fossils are pressed into the rock. this is an example of a mold fossil of a fern from thousands of years ago.
8: cast fossils are mold fossils that get filled in over the years to make a cast of the original item.
9: this is a great example of a cast fossil. it was a blastoid which is an extinct animal.
10: a trace fossil is a fossil of something left behind by an animal such as these fossilized footprints.
11: A true form fossil is an actual animal or animal part.
