1: If you were coming in the Fall, I'd brush the Summer by With half a smile, and half a spurn, As Housewives do, a Fly.
2: If I could see you in a year, I'd wind the months in balls- And put them each in seperate Drawers, For fear the numbers fuse-
3: If only Centuries, delayed, I'd count them on my Hand, Subtracting, till my fingers dropped Into Van Dieman's Land.
5: If certain, when this life was out- That your's and mine, should be I'd toss it yonder, like a Rind, And take Eternity-
6: But, now, uncertain of the length Of this, that is between, It goads me, like the Goblin Bee- That will not state-it's sting.
10: If you were coming in the fall I would go through the summer quickly Half happy half sad As housewives are If i could see you in a year I would put the months together Putting them away into seperate drawers Fearing that they may come back together 100 years delayed I would count them for many years with my hands Counting the years till my fingers come off Into the island that is the state of Austrailia.
13: When life ends, Me and you together, Tossing the years away, Until we reach eternity, Not sure how long we will be apart Because of what separates us It hurts me Like a Goblins Bee sting

22: THEME | The author is saying that, you might love someone but you will never know how long you will stay with that person until it happens. Throughout the poem she uses if and makes things uncertain and in other ways she bounces back with certainty.
23: Like she is certain she loves him but doesn't know how long they will be together. In each stanza the time she is waiting gets longer and longer. From months to years to centuries to eternities.
