FC: Oliver & Sarah
1: Thank you for reading our letter! | Hello! We’re Sarah & Oliver! Thank you for reading our letter as you contemplate making an adoption plan for your child. Please know that our hearts go out to you. Our hope is that your needs are met during this process no matter what path you take, and we look forward to sharing this journey and building a relationship with you should you find us to be the right match for you and your child. A little about how we met... We met in California where Sarah was born and raised and where Oliver had attended college. Oliver was teaching social studies to high school students and Sarah was completing an internship in counseling with elementary school kids. We had been best friends for some time and would always close down the local coffee shop with long conversations, but it was when Sarah spontaneously invited Oliver to join her on a road trip to the Museum of Modern Art (our first official date) that the sparks really flew! We've been inseparable ever since and married for over six years. We now live on the east coast in the same town as Oliver's entire family. Meanwhile, Oliver has been pursuing a Ph.D. in education. We always knew that we wanted to build a family together and look forward to having that happen through adoption.
2: Sarah about Oliver... I was first drawn to Oliver's gentle, easygoing manner, and the deep caring he showed for others, particularly to his students. I remember running into his students on several occasions and each time I would hear a glowing review of how Oliver was the best teacher they'd ever had! They even created a Facebook page honoring him! He has the ability to not only enrich their minds, but to inspire their hearts. I continue to admire his never ending dedication to kids, his work towards social justice, and of course his playfulness! Oliver brings this same warmth and fun into our home. He is constantly making me laugh as we play games or even dance in the middle of the kitchen waiting for the teapot to boil. He truly listens when you need a friend, is genuine in his desire to help, puts family first, and is my rock! Not to mention he's an amazing musician and even wrote a song for Sesame Street! Oliver's warm heart, patience, dedication to others, intelligence, and creativity are qualities that are going to make him an amazing dad! Oliver about Sarah... Where do I begin! She is nurturing, funny, strong, and a great listener. She makes people feel at ease with her gentle words and calming energy. Kids love to be around Sarah. They sense her genuine kindness, and she always gets everyone giggling! Our niece and nephew come over all of the time to make art with her and practice their cooking, and our little cousin had so much fun with her over Christmas dancing and being silly on the California beach. When I see the big smiles kids have around Sarah, I remember exactly why I fell in love with her. I am able to be myself completely around her without ever feeling judged. Sarah is extremely creative and artistic. Whether she's designing something on her loom, in the kitchen, or in the garden, her personal flair makes the world more beautiful. She is also very wise. She is my anchor when life gets rough and my sounding board when I am trying to solve a dilemma. For many years, Sarah has worked in the field of psychology to assist and advocate for kids and women. She provides them with tremendous emotional support, empowers them to feel good about themselves and to reach for their dreams. I know that she will continue to offer that type of support as a mom and looks forward to being home with a little one. Sarah's thoughtfulness, patience, warmth, intellect, reliability, and enthusiasm will make her a fantastic mom!
3: Life in our home... Our home is truly filled with joy. We own a two-story, three-bedroom house on a quiet, tree lined street with a big enclosed backyard and plenty of space for romping around and doing art projects in our family room. Sarah loves to cook and can be found with every pot going and jazz music bumping on Oliver’s record player (yes he still has one!), as she experiments with new recipes from around the world. Her fondest memories are cooking with her mother and she looks forward to sharing that along with any favorite family recipes of yours. Our neighborhood is very diverse, full of kids, and has really great schools (Oliver made sure of that!). We enjoy walking to the local farmers' market, parks, restaurants, and the botanical garden. We also love to go on weekend family trips. After eating homemade pancakes and eggs, we jump in the car with our dogs and drive into the countryside for a hike in the nearby mountains or sometimes we pick our own berries at one of the local organic farms. Oliver’s parents, siblings, niece, and nephew all live in our town, so we have lots of nearby family ready and excited about pampering your little one! Every year we go with Oliver’s family to their lakeside summer home in the mountains to sail, canoe, ride in their pontoon boat, and barbecue. Oliver has gone every year since he was born and can’t wait to share his family's tradition. We also love going to California each year to visit Sarah’s family. We explore the Los Angeles and San Francisco Bay Area museums, go see live music, and enjoy the beaches. Also, one of Sarah’s favorite traditions is camping in the national forests of California with her family. She can pitch a mean tent and loves to roast s'mores with her brothers! We also love to travel internationally. Between the two of us we've been to Japan, Peru, Mexico, Germany, England, and Scotland! We look forward to sharing these adventures with your child. Our adoption journey... After having difficulty conceiving, we realized that life had another path for us. Having familiarity with adoption on both sides of our family made adoption feel like a natural choice for us. Sarah’s aunt and uncle recently adopted a little girl through a domestic, open adoption and Oliver’s cousins were both adopted. So your child will have many family members with similar experiences to seek support and guidance from. We are a diverse family to start with, having Japanese, Mexican, and European family members and will embrace and celebrate the culture and heritage of any child that enters our family. We are excited to experience the joys and challenges of parenthood and are committed to offering your child a life of unconditional love and nurturing. We are also dedicated to building a relationship with you so that your child will know you and the love that you have for him/her. We wish you peace and happiness through this journey. Take care, Sarah & Oliver
