FC: The Wedding of Robin & Andy St James

April 30, 2011 Union Pacific Depot Lawrence, Kansas

Andy's Vows Before we met, you and I were halves un-joined except in the wide rivers of our minds. We were each other's distant shore, the opposite wings of a bird, the other half of a seashell. We did not know the other then, did not know our determination to keep listening for the cry of one river bank to the other, and our desire to keep the hope of love and acceptance alive. We were apart, yet connected in our ignorance of each other, like two apples sharing a common tree. Do you remember? I knew you existed long before you understood my desire to join my freedom to yours. Our paths collided long enough for our indecision to be swallowed up by the greater need of love. When you came to me, the sun surged towards the earth, and the moon escaped from darkness to shine on us because of the greatness and purity of our love. My beloved partner, you are the keeper of my heart's secrets, clothed in summer blossoms so the icy hand of winter will never touch our love for one another. I thank you for your patience and your willingness to give me a chance. Our joining is like a tree to earth, a cloud to sky and the river to its banks. You are the reason that I can laugh and smile and rise like a phoenix from the ashes of my loneliness to hear me say, in this time, this place, this way I love you most of all, and will continue to love you best of all for the rest of my life.

Robin's Vows Once in a while, right in the middle of our ordinary lives, love gives us a fairy tale. That fairy tale began for me one very warm August afternoon in 2009. You and I were to finally meet and I was so nervous that I forgot to put on deodorant so had to stop and buy some on the way. You were so nervous that you'd had to stop and buy a new shirt. Of course that's not the fairy tale part. That began the moment I saw your smile. It lit up your face and spread all the way to my heart. It grew into infatuation, and as I came to know you, admiration and finally love. I've come to respect your patience and understanding, your incredible empathy and acceptance, your kindness and generosity to those most in need. I am in awe of your courage. You and I don't need the in sickness and in health part of the traditional vows. We've already done that. I think we've been doing it right. We've done the joy and sorrow part too. Our life is filled with laughter and music, but we've had a loss that would have been unbearable for me if not for you. I told you soon after we met though that making new, better memories will take the place of all the bad ones. We've been doing a pretty good job of it and I want to continue for the rest of our lives.

To a Stranger by Walt Whitman Passing stranger! you do not know how longingly I look upon you; You must be he I was seeking, or she I was seeking (it comes to me, as of a dream). I have somewhere surely lived a life of joy with you. All is recalled as we flit by each other, fluid, affectionate, chaste, matured; You grew up with me, were a boy with me, or a girl with me; I ate with you, and slept with you--your body has become not yours only, nor left my body mine only; You give me the pleasure of your eyes, face, flesh, as we pass--you take of my beard, breast, hands in return; I am not to speak to you--I am to think of you when I sit alone, or wake at night alone; I am to wait--I do not doubt I am to meet you again; I am to see to it that I do not lose you. | Read by John Rogers

 Just Married

"We all know something of the symbolism of the ring, but it’s real purpose is practical, not symbolic. It says 'I’m married,' to the rest of the world, and, more importantly, to oneself. Andy, Robin, please know that all of those who hold you in their hearts fervently hope that neither of you will ever look at your wedding ring without recalling the love you feel here today." Sam Singleton

 Double Happiness

 People We Love

 Friends and Family

 Pig Pen Holler

 More Love

From The Velveteen Rabbit by Margery Williams "What is REAL?"asked the Rabbit one day, when they were lying side by side near the nursery fender, before Nana came to tidy the room. "Does it mean having things that buzz inside you and a stick-out handle?" "Real isn't how you are made," said the Skin Horse. "It's a thing that happens to you. When a child loves you for a long, long time, not just to play with, butREALLY loves you, then you become Real." "Does it hurt?" asked the Rabbit. "Sometimes," said the Skin Horse, for he was always truthful. "When you are Real you don't mind being hurt." "Does it happen all at once, like being wound up," he asked, "or bit by bit?" "It doesn't happen all at once," said the Skin Horse. "You become. It takes a long time. That's why it doesn't happen often to people who break easily, or have sharp edges, or who have to be carefully kept. Generally, by the time you are Real, most of your hair has been loved off, and your eyes drop out and you get loose in your joints and very shabby. But these things don't matter at all, because once you are Real you can't be ugly, except to people who don't understand." | Read by Collene Lewis
