3: The Davidson’s had started the husky rescue group, Hmes for Huskies, with the help of Curtis and Stacy Smith, Dean’s daughter; and a friend Mary Lou Frahm. Rescue was only offered to those at the end of the line, the line to euthanasia and looked like a harnessable Northern breed. The Shelter veterinarian guessed her to be about three months old with runny nose and eyes, with a hoarse cough; symptoms of Kennel Cough. They labeled her a 'Husky mix'. That is how Homes for Huskies came to be aware of her. Husky mix? Nope, no Husky, not with those great big hairy feet. Australian Shepherd, maybe, possibly wrapped around a Golden Retriever frame, but not much Husky. Not Husky, but that's how fate works sometimes. Don't ya know, she was meant to end up with the Davidson's. | Kiana, the Life of One Dog | lthough her formal name was Kiana, after the northwest village in Alaska, she had many nick names: Ki Pepper, Pepperoni, Ki, Kipushka, not the least affectionate was Lil' Babers, among others. More on Lil' Babers later. You could occasionally hear her referred to as Mrs. Potato Head, for the breeds she might have combined; also Piss Ant, and Snooziller, for she lived by her nose. Her breed, that's a real question. Her family never knew where this pup started out, but life began when she was adopted by Homes for Huskies from the Anchorage Animal Shelter in November, 1998. Dean and Nina Davidson were checking out the Anchorage Skijor Club meeting that night. Yep, that's right, the Skijor Club held their meetings at the Anchorage Pound. Before the meeting started Nina went in the back at the shelter to look through the kennels for any huskies removed from the adoption kennels, put back in the euthanize section.
