1: Summary of: A Raisin in the Sun

2: Summary of the plot | The whole play takes place in a few weeks. Younger's are waiting for insurance money to come, which is $10000. They all have different ideas of what to do with the money. As the play continues their dreams get in the way of their feelings. Finally when the money comes Mama buys a house. Walter gets furious. Mama realizing that the situation in the house is getting worse, decides to give the rest of the money to Walter and Beneatha. Walter without telling anyone invests all the money in a liquor business. Unfortunately his friend runs away,and they neither have a store, nor money. Despite the loss of money they decide to move to the house Mama bought earlier; the house in the White neighborhood.

3: Characters | Walter Lee Younger: the protagonist of the play; wants to invest in a liquor store | Ruth Younger: Walter's wife, and Travis's mother | Beneatha Younger: Walter's sister; wants to become a doctor | Lena Younger: Walter and Beneatha's mother; bought a new house with the insurance money | Travis Younger: Ruth and Walter's son; sleeps in he living room | Joseph Asagai: he is from nigeria; is in love with Beneatha | Bobo & Willy Harris: Walter's friends | Mr. Linder: he is from a commitee of the neighborhood they are moving into

4: Setting | The play occurs after World War II, in Chicago's southside. Most of the play takes place in Younger;s apartment

5: Genre | The genre of this book is realistic drama. Walter Lee Young decides to put all the money in a liquor store investement. His "friend" runs away with money, and the Younger family once again has no money.

6: Author Information | Lorraine Hansberry was born in Chicago on May 19, 1930. She grew up on the southside of chicago, and like it was in the play her family moved into a white people neighborhood. She dropped out of college and worked as an editor for Black newspaper called freedom. That was the time she wrote "A Raisin in the Sun" Lorraine Hansberry died on January 12, 1965 at age of 34.
