S: Athena, Is Smarto Smart?

This is Athena, an American dog true. She is a Catahoula Leopard dog with nothing to do. She has no one to play with in this house at all, not a boy, not a girl, not even a doll.

She is a playgirl and she loves to have fun. When she’s bored or excited, she will run, run, and run. Today she is sulky, today she is sappy. Athena ran and she ran but she is just not happy.

Athena tries to charm Bailey dog, who is lying in a lump. Every once in a while Bailey's giant tail goes thump. Bailey glares at Athena with aggravation and disgust, wishing that Athena would turn into dust!

Then in came Athena's mom who exclaimed with delight, "Athena you are going to have company tonight. Guess who is coming to share New Year's Eve? It's the cousin we love, it's the gorgeous Miss V!"

Athena perked up and jumped straight in the air. She would have someone to play with, "Oh yes, life was fair!" She ran and she ran, in her excitement it was vital. Then she went to the door to await Miss V's arrival.

So arrive did Miss V in her typical style, with many of her things on her dad in a pile. He carried cereal, and pop corn, and cookies, and toys. Miss V certainly knows how to manage her boys!

“Athena,” squealed Miss V, “come see me, I’m here.” Before she could finish, Athena did appear. Athena ran circles round the room and Miss V. She was happy as happy as happy can be.

They ran upstairs then downstairs then wrestled on the floor. They were inside then outside then running through the door. All of the TVÂ’s in the house they set blaring. And the soap from the washroom Athena was wearing!

All at once Miss V stopped dead in her tracks. She whined, “I’m tired, I quit, and those are the facts!” Then Miss V got her doll and she started to play. Athena just stared in shock and dismay.

Athena stole the doll and scurried away. Miss V started screaming, “Athena you’ll pay!” Then Miss V chased Athena all over the room. It was difficult to tell who was chasing whom!

Athena dropped the doll and turned on Miss V. She was biting her socks, and it felt like a bee. Miss V started running and screeching and yelling. “Why can’t you be more like Bailey, I’m telling!”

Miss V hugged Bailey long, she hugged Bailey tight. She said “See, Bailey does not ever bite. She does not growl, she does not snare. She does not run anywhere.”

Athena could not believe what she heard, No, no, not even one single word. Then Momma ran into the room in a rush, To see what in the world was all of the fuss.

It was time to distract as the tiff had turned jumbo. Mom said, “Here is a little gray elephant and his name is Gumbo.” Athena wondered, "What fun could a little gray elephant be?" Then the elephant jumped up and exclaimed without glee.

“Oh NO, Not GUMBO, that name is so dumb! Where in the world did that name come from?" “Gumbo is one of Louisiana’s best foods,” said Miss V. “It’s oh so delicious and yummy to me.”

The elephant groaned, “Gumbo sounds dumb and that I won’t be. I am smart, so I choose the name Smarto for me! I am smart, I am smart, and I will prove it to you. Just listen to me for a moment or two.” "I'm an Asian elephant," he said with a start. "How would I know this if I was not smart? The African elephant has much bigger ears, but all that I need are my small ones to hear!"

"The African elephant is the largest land animal you'll meet. It weighs eight tons and stands thirteen feet. The Asian elephant weighs a slighter six tons, and only stands ten feet but we are still much fun. On the African boy and the girl tusks abound, but on the Asian it's usually on the boy if they're found."

Athena and Miss V shared glances and then, Both yelled, "Okay, your name is Smarto, you are smart, you win." But they wondered if Smarto truly was wise, Since Smarto's ears were really a pretty good size. Smarto smiled big and puffed his chest in the air. He liked his new friends, they really did care.

Smarto's talk had derailed Miss V's and Athena's fight. Next they all watched fireworks outside New Year's Eve night. Smarto kept chattering, and about elephants he knew, But Athena realized on most things Smarto did not have a clue.

In the morning Miss V was to leave with her dad. Athena and Smarto were feeling quite sad. To liven them up Momma brought in a cat. She said, "Here's a kitty cat and its name is just that."

When all of the adults had walked out of sight, Kitty cat jumped up and down with much might. Kitty shouted, "Kitty Cat, Kitty Cat, what kind of name is that? A girl's not named Girl and a cat's not named Cat!"

Smarto agreed that the name Kitty Cat was just lame. He said, "Of course, Kitty Cat, you must have a new name." Miss V and Athena just looked at each other. In unison they yelled, "Here we go again, oh brother, oh brother!"

As Miss V drove off with her dad in the car, and before they had driven very far, she looked back to see in a huddle the three, and wondered what the name for Kitty Cat would be.

Smarto said to Athena "You and me are a team. We are on to adventures and following our dreams. It's Smarto and Athena off to help others in need, we are best friends forever, yes indeed, yes indeed!" Athena remembered how bored she had been. Now with Smarto she would never be bored again. Kitty Kat piped up to get back in the game, "Okay brilliant team, let's come up with my name!" The End
