FC: Class Of 2011

1: Thank you, Xi'exi'e, M goi nei sin, Maraming salamat po sa inyo, Amesgunalhum, Mese, Tlazohcamati huel mica, Gracias to all students, families of our students, and faculty for allowing me to serve our SIATech Los Angeles community as your principal. It is with great pleasure that I write this opening address to welcome you to our first yearbook in the history of this school site for the Los Angeles SIATech Charter School. In the short time that I have been your principal, I have seen a student body that is committed to excellence. The idea of creating this yearbook is one of many examples that I have witnessed on our campus which illustrates how a supportive faculty and student body that works together is able to accomplish goals and dreams. The dedication and commitment of your teachers is also a daily honor and privilege that I experience and it is through their partnership with you as the students body that we are able to make your academic goals a reality in achieving a high school diploma. Many individuals in your life have doubted your ability to accomplish the goal of obtaining a high school diploma. For many of you have attended previous schools with "push-out" rates that are as high as 50%. This percentage is even higher for Latina/o and African American students, with some Los Angeles high schools with "push-outs" rates as high as 60% for these student populations. I use the term "push-outs" rather than "drop-out" because it forces us as educators to rethink why students leave school. Every student that I conversed with at our campus loves education, but has had unsuccessful experiences with their previous schools. Thus it is the system of schooling that we need to carefully asses and re-imagine an approach that engages students in their love of education and their love for learning. Brazilian educator Paulo Freire discusses this very idea of meeting the needs of students and creating educational opportunities that are aligned with the community. As we all reflect on our accomplishments in turning the pages of Los Angeles SIATech's first yearbook, let us keep at the forefront of our minds what the purpose of education is; to improve the living conditions for all of society. As Malcolm X so eloquenty expressed, " Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today."

42: Love I s In The Air When I think Of you I get this weird feeling. It's a feeling that is not going to go away. I love spending time with you. When I'm away from you I get mad and sad. I wish this pain can just go away. When I look into your eyes. I see that we belong together. When I'm around you I feel secure. It's like you're not trying to let me go. But the distance that is between us is so awkward. I know you're just a call way. But when I call I get no answer I sit and sometimezs wonder if you still love me. But I know at the end of the day you're going to always love me. By: Unique Mcclean

43: A Little Girl I know a little girl whose smile could light up a room. Whose presence could get you scared. I know about the Grinch who had a large heart, But then over the years grew smaller, And now it's growing every heartbeat. She may not have the perfect nor cleanest history, But yet doesn't define who she will be, And I know that little girl who has been a woman since birth, Fighting to overcome violence at home, Whose parents have been in the streets. I know a little girl that has never been a little girl till now. Now she can play and run around and see the good in a life that has dreams. Now I know a woman and that woman is the one I love. She is the one that you wonder why? Why did chemistry work that way? What happened in the chemical formula? Nothing went wrong. The only thing that happen was that the earthquake broke that wall down. Now she is putting that beer bottle down and turning that blunt off. She is eliminating those toxins and throwing them away, So that she will be someone she never thought she would. I know a woman whose life hasn't been easy, But I know a woman that I love, And I want to do better with because we are stronger than an atomic bomb.. By: Freddy Montiel
