Cortes replaced the Aztecs idols in the palace where he was staying with statues of Roman Catholic Saints and he replaced large idols in the main temple. Moctezuma's advisorors were disgusted that he had let the Sapnish into the city and he was allowing them to set up statues of the Spanish religion. They felt Moctezuma was weak and had let down his people and diminished the reputation of the Aztecs. They than deserted him leaving him hostage with the Spanish. Moctezuma was jeered and seriously hurt by stones hurtled at him, he then died because of the damage.
