1: Plainview is a progressive, small town in southeastern Minnesota located 21 miles from Rochester, the regions major metropolitan city. It has a population of 3,340, Plainview offers residents a safe, secure alternative to a more urban setting!

3: Plainview is fourteen miles from hunting, fishing and boating on the Mississippi River. The Whitewater and Zumbro River Valleys are less than five miles from city limits. | The Mighty Mississippi

4: Picturesque limestone bluffs and deep ravines make Whitewater a very popular southeastern state park. The 2,700 acre park is an angler's paradise with brown, brook, and rainbow trout swimming in the spring-fed Whitewater River and Trout Run Creek. Visitors enjoy a sandy swimming beach, a year-round visitor center, easy-to-challenging hiking trails, camping, a group camp, and a modern group center. | Whitewater State Park | Plainview is surrounded by portions of the two million acre Richard J. Dorer Memorial Hardwood State Forest. The forest is located in Dakota, Fillmore, Goodhue, Olmsted, Houston, Wabasha, and Winona Counties. 5: Carley State Park | Beauty and quiet, that is the essence of Carley State Park. In the spring, delicate bluebells (Mertensia virginica), and other wildflowers carpet the valley with a profusion of color. Hike along the trail that follows the Whitewater River and take in the grand old white pines. Listen for the sweet song of orioles, song sparrows, house wrens, and indigo buntings.

7: Looking to the future.... | Plainview, Minnesota has been called the "Plateau of Plenty" since it was founded in 1856.

8: The Plainview Area History Center is a non-profit organization and an affiliate of the Rural America Arts Partnership. The building was purchased entirely by funds raised through the generous giving of groups and individuals. It is not a city funded organization and receives no tax dollars. The Center relies entirely on generous gifts from organizations, individuals, and grants. | 40 4th St SW Plainview

9: The Center was purchased from the Methodist Church in late December 1998, taking possession in May of 1999. A "Get Acquainted Opening" was held June 1999 featuring tours of the building and horse drawn rides with historical commentary. By October 1999, the Center was readied and open to the public. In 2008, the Center purchased the J.R. Watkins house. It has been renovated to show the humble beginnings of the Watkins enterprise and tell about the Watkins family and their 17 year stay in Plainview. 12: In 2004 three existing trail advocacy groups working independently decided to work collaboratively on a trail system that will connect all three trails creating a 50 mile State Trail loop. This loop connects the cities of Rochester, Eyota, Dover , St.Charles, Elba, Plainview , Elgin and Viola with the Whitewater and Carley State Parks and Olmsted County’s Chester Woods Park . The original three groups are: Great River Ridge, Chester Woods and Whitewater/St.Charles Trail Committees. Each had made some progress but with the larger plan were able to promote it to a larger audience and gain from the experience and knowledge of each other. Since beginning & working together an additional 8 miles of trail on the Great River Ridge has been paved and 5 miles of trail will have been built between Rochester and Olmsted's Chester Woods County Park. | Great River Ridge Bike Trail

13: The 9-hole course at the Piper Hills Golf Course facility in Plainview features 3,086 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 36 . 16: In 1999 the International Harvester Implement building was purchased by the Rural American Arts Partnership to be come the theater itself. Back in 1985 the Lyric Theater was founded by Sally Childs who would later become the artistic director of the Jon Hassler Theater. Then in 1999 the Lyric Theater started holding shows at the Hassler and in 2000 the Lyric Theater moved its head-quarters down to the Hassler. It is named after local author Jon Hassler.
