Holden attended Pencey High School for three years. | He was kicked out for having bad grades. So he packed his suitcase and left. | "Sleep tight, ya morons!" (Salinger 52) Holden says as he leaves the school.
Parents | Grandparents | In his suit case he packed his brother Allie’s base ball mitt. It is covered in poetry written by his brother Allie. “I happened to have it with me, in my suitcase, so I got it out and copied down the poems written on it” (Salinger 39).
“Let’s go ice skating at Radio City!” (Salinger 128). Holden ice skates with Sally Hayes at the Radio City. He also helps a friend of Phoebe's tie her skates. Skates symbolize helping others.
“After old Sunny was gone, I sat in the chair for a while and smoked a couple of cigarettes” (Salinger 14). Holden seems to smoke when he feels nervous or bored. | “Listen, do you got any dough, Phoeb? I’m practically broke” (Salinger 178). Holden borrows money from his little sister. He donates money to some nuns and then needs it later on for his date.
“We got to the Edmont Hotel, and I checked in. I’d put on my red hunting cap when I was in the cab, just for the hell of it, but I took it off before I checked in” (Salinger 61).
The Edmont Hotel | Holden brings his red hunting hat, cigarettes, suitcase, money, baseball mitt, and all his other belongings to his hotel room with him. The hotel represents a temporary home for Holden.
“The best thing, though, in that museum was that everything always stayed right where it was. Nobody’d move. . . . Nobody’d be different. The only thing that would be different would be you” (Salinger 121). Holden liked the fact that no matter how much he changes while growing up. the Museum always stayed the same.
Holden has been to the subway many times. He went there with his fencing team. After leaving Pencey, he met a classmate's mother there. He also met some nuns at the subway and donated some money for charity. | “I just got back from New York with the fencing team, I left all the foils and equipment on the subway” (Salinger 3).
“I was wondering where the ducks went when the lagoon got all icy and frozen over” (Salinger 13). The Lagoon at Central Park with the ducks are something he thinks about to take his mind off of things. To think about something other than all his personal problems.
“Then the carrousel started and I watched her go around and around” (Salinger 211). Holden enjoyed seeing the happiness and delight of his younger sister during her childhood.
“I put my red hunting hat on, and turned the peak around to the back, the way I liked it,” (Salinger 52). He bought the hat from New York for a dollar after losing Pencey’s fencing team equipment near the train station. Holden's hat makes him feel comfortable inside and out.
