Abby Bennin Katie Richart Norah Grabinski

Once there was a lake...and she loved a little girl. And every day the little girl would come and she would swim in her waves, pack her sand into castles, catch fish from her dock, and collect seashells from her shore. And the girl loved the lake....Very much. And the lake was happy.

But time went by, and the girl grew older. And the lake was often alone. Then one day, the girl came back to the lake and the lake said: "Come, Girl, come swim in my waves, pack my sand into castles, catch fish from my dock, and collect seashells from my shore and be "happy."

"I am too big to swim in waves," said the girl. "I want to buy things and have fun. I want some money. Can you give me some money?" "I am sorry" said the lake, "but I have no money. I have only waves, sand, fish, and seashells. But take my seashells, Girl, and sell them in the city. Then you will have money and you will be happy."

And so the girl gathered the shells and carried them away. And the lake was happy. But the girl stayed away for a long time... And the lake was sad. And then one day the girl came back. The lake's waves rolled to the shore with joy and said: "Come, Girl, come and swim in my waves, pack my sand into castles, fish from my dock, and collect seashells on my shores and be "happy"

"I am too busy to swim in waves," said the girl. "I want food to keep me full. Do you have food?" "I have no food" said the lake. "I do not need it" said the lake. "But you may catch fish from my dock and eat everything you get. Then you will be happy." An so the girl caught fish and carried them away to eat. And the lake was happy

But the girl stayed away for a long time...and the lake was sad. And when she came back, the lake was so happy she could hardly speak. "Come, Girl" she whispered, "Come and play" "I am too old and sad to play" said the girl.m"I want a boat that will take me away from here. Can you give me a boat?"

"I do not have anything to make a boat, but I do have waves," said the lake. "Then jump into my water and let my waves carry you away...and be "happy." And so the girl jumped in, and the waves carried her away. And the lake was happy...but not really. And after a long time the girl came back again.

"I am sorry, Girl" said the lake, "but my waves have died down." "My body is too weak for swimming," said the girl. "My sand is dry" said the lake. "You cannot pack it into castles-" "I am too old to pack sand" said the girl. "My fish are gone," said the lake. "you cannot catch them-" "I am too tired to catch fish," said the girl.

"I am sorry" sighed the lake. "I wish that I could give you something...but I have nothing left. I am just an old, dry pit. I am sorry..." "I don't need very much now" said the girl. "Just a quiet place to sit and rest. I am very tired." "Well" said the lake, straightening herself up as much as she could, "and old dry pit is good for sitting and resting. Come, Girl, come sit down...and rest."

 And the lake was happy.
