3: A note from the Artist: This is the visual journal of Alexa Larksong, my maternal great-grandmother. I found it in a box of family heirlooms, carefully wrapped in waxed linen and tied with seaweed. In the 1890's, Alexa lived a lush and exciting life, traveling the world with her diplomat father who was Ambassador-at-Large for the Nation of Cascadia. In 1895 they went to the Kingdom of the Netherwet, an undersea kingdom, which was discovered when one of Cascadia's steam-powered submarines was exploring the depths of the Marianas Trench. Living undersea in those times would certainly have been perilous, but exciting! It appears she often explored the Netherwet accompanied by her diver escort and a camera. A note in the package indicated that the pictures were sent to her sister Anna in her father's Diplomatic Pouch, which was strapped to a dolphin who eventually delivered it to Cascadia. The pouch was very small, so Alexa created post cards to contain the image and a short message. Sadly, they are the only remaining images of the NetherWet Kingdom, as it disappeared in an undersea earthquake shortly after Alexa and her father returned home. .
