S: Things Fall Apart...TFA
FC: Things Fall Apart | Africa | By: Spencer Barnes | This is how I look. 19 October 2011.
CAMPING | Okonkwo is the main character in the story, and everyone likes him. He is very strict and demands that everyone obeys him. Okonkwo is very masculine and accident killed Ikemefuna. Because of that he got exiled from his village. He had extremely low regards for his father, and hates everything he does.
 1. Okokwo's father is workthless. He dies leaving Okonkwo alone and having to defend himself. | 2. Okonkwo gets Seed Yams, and begins to fend for himself
3.Works his way up tribal ladder or respect by taking titles and flipping the well known and respected wrestler known as Cat . | 4.Ekewefi, one of Okonkwo's wife, runs away from her first husband to be with him. | 6. Okonkwo accidentally shoots a kid, which kills him, his punishment is 7 years of exile . | 5. The Oracle makes a prophecy saying Okonkwo will kill Ikemifuma | 7. The Christians arrive, they persuade Okonkwo's oldest son to join them, making Okonkwo shun him.
"The Earth cannot punish me for obeying her messenger." (Achebe 67) Which means he can be punished for doing whats right. | "A child's fingers are not scalded by a piece of hot yam which its mother puts into its palm." (Achebe 67) It stood out because it seemed to go with his guilt for killing Ikemifuma. | | "Making him look the same as what he mocks. On top of that, he does this during the week of peace, which is a week which there is to be no violence, then to to top it all off, this hasn't happened in hundreds of years, due to the fact that this tradition is so sacred." (Achebe 39)
"Okonkwo was Popularly called the Roaring Flame, due to the fact that like fire he could both sustain life, and take it away." (Achebe 133) | "Looking at a kings mouth one would think he never sucked at his mothers breast." (Achebe 22) It means how like even Okonkwo had some help and guidance to get to where he was
Proverb 1-" A chick that will grow into a cock can be spotted the very day it hatches." (Achebe 57) When Okonkwo's son is showing signs of being like his grandfather, Okonkwo becomes angry because the quote was only applying to Ikemifuma, who wasn't even his real son. Since Okonkwo had already killed Ikemifuma, he knew that his oldest son was his only hope. But Okonkwo loses all hope of his son changing once he joined the Christian church.
Proverb 2-"If one finger brought oil it soiled the others." (Achebe 111) This was said by Obierka after he was forced to destroy Okonkwo's huts.It means that if they condemn the execution of a innocent child, it would be by all of them, not just one. Even though Okonkwo was highly respected they couldn't disobey the Earth Goddess's rules, unless they were prepared to face her wrath. | \
Masculinity: When Okonkwo is a young man, he flips the most well known and renowned wrestler, Cat. This earns him both respect and the hearts of many women. So much that one women runs away from her husband just to be with him. | Religion: Okonkwo is very dedicated and commited to his religion. So much the when the Oracle prophecizes that Okonkwo must kill his adopted son, he follows through without even questioning it. Thisnot only shows his loyalty to his religion, but also that he will fulfill any matter that he has to, at any cost.
Irony is present, when Okonkwo kills his own son, and everyone is okay with it, even rewarding him for it. Yet when he accidentally kills someone else's son, everyone immediately goes crazy, and want to punish him. (Achebe 109) I think that this is extremely ironic.
