 12 | HOURS | in London

8AM | I had a 12 hour layover in London, England on my way to Cape Town for a 21 day adventure in Africa. Instead of waiting at the airport for the duration, I decided to go into town and see as much as I could. | The agent did give me a bit of a hassle to let me into his country for 12 hours. I showed him my boarding pass for 8pm that night, explaining I didn't want to sit in the airport for the duration. I had 50 pounds with me and just wanted to see a little bit of London. He stamped my passport and I was in! First, find the tube to get into downtown. It was pretty easy to follow the signs and use the automated machine to buy a ticket. I was starting my adventure.

10AM | The one hour ride into downtown was pretty uneventful. I decided that I wanted to see the Changing of the Guards at Buckingham Palace. It was pretty easy to find off of the Green Park stop. The flag was raised which means the queen was at the palace that day. I got there at 10am to get a decent spot by the fence to watch the action starting at 10:30am. | Buckingham Palace

After the 30 minute Changing of the Guards, there was the rest of the city to see... With only 50 pounds in my pocket, I decided to take a hop on, hop off bus tour of all the highlights. There were two companies to choose from and I bought the first one that came along - The Original Tour. In one direction, there is a live person telling you the sights; in the other direction, you use your headphones to listen to the history. | 11AM | The tour went all of the major stops of touristy interest. With the lack of sleep from the overnight flight, I decided it was a relaxing way to see the city. I paid the 35 pounds for the day pass and go on the double decker bus. I was always able to get a seat at the top of the beautiful day to see the views.

 12PM | Westminster Abbey

Big Ben and The House of Parliament

 Trafalgar Square

 St Paul's Cathedral

 Tower Bridge

The Tower Bridge is often mistaken for the London Bridge. Actually, the London bridge just looks like a concrete bridge and uninteresting. The Tower Bridge is spectacular looking. I jumped off the bus to have a quick look at the outside of The Tower of London. I would have liked to go in but time didn't permit me to do so. The tour included a boat cruise down the Thames River. It started at the base of the Tower Bridge and ended back at Big Ben and the House of Parliament. The half hour boat ride was quite relaxing and very beautiful. | 2PM

 3PM

 The London Eye

 The Thames River

Alas, my time was up. I hopped back on the Tube and back to the airport, awaiting my next adventure....Africa! | 5PM
