BC: Created by the Haeflinger family Summer 2011 Arizona trip

FC: Grand Canyon... PetrifiedForest... Slot | Canyon... Painted Desert... Four Corners... | Monument Valley... Meteor Crater... | Sunset Crater... Hopi Reservation...

Some of our favorite memories... HOT, HOT, HOT! Cool designs in stone along highways...much prettier than IL! No one could pick one favorite place, but would have liked to spend more than 1 day at the Grand canyon. Enjoyed hiking up Sunset Crater. Interesting to learn about Indian culture and how things were differnt long ago!

Petrified Forest | Amazing to see trees so old they turned to rock!

Top Left: Katlyn, Top Right: Erin

Hundreds of pictures carved into rock to tell stories from long ago...what do they mean and who left them were a couple of questions we had as we discovered them. Pretty amazing to realize they were "drawn" with rocks.

 The Painted Desert

The Painted Desert Inn | Original bar stools | Wall murals painted by local Hopi artist | Stained glass ceiling tiles above the bar

Outside on the patio Left: Katlyn, Kelly, Erin | Brian and Kelly | Katlyn on the patio | Kelly and Erin on the patio

Meteor Crater over 3/4 mile wide and 700 feet deep, some rocks are as big as houses

Navajo National Monument, Sandal Trail Erin and Katlyn resting brefore the hike.

The girls resting again along the trail, building up their strength to hold the rock above their heads!

More incredible views from Sandal Trail

Actual Pueblos in the mountainside. We still don't know how they got to them. | Must have been a back way in

Where else can you stand in 4 states at the same time?

Erin sitting in 4 states | Kelly, Brian, Katlyn & Erin | Four Corners National Monument | Katlyn standing in all 4 | Brian in 4 states

View leading up to Monument Valley | From this side this one looks like a face | This is a cross from this angle | A mitten in the desert? | Wait, make that a pair! | Rain in the distance

Our personal experience with a haboob (sand storm) as we were rounding a bend in Monument Valley. It only lasted a few minutes, but it was pretty amazing to watch it come around the corner, pick up speed and then blow away behind us. Shortly after the sand storm came the thunder and lightening, followed by yet another rainbow!

Elephant rock at top left A nun and her 2 students bottom left | A lonely cowboy out on the ledge before the storm

Katlyn in purple, Erin in white doing some rock climbing and weight lifting.

Desert View Tower murals on ceilings and walls, Katlyn & Erin checking out the view of the canyon from the patio steps

More views of the Grand Canyon from the Desert View Visitor Center. Katlyn resting in the shade.

 Views from Hermits Rest

The day started out with a beautiful bike ride through the Grand Canyon, then the monsoon came and saoked us to the bone! As we waited by the shuttle stop...the Grand Canyon disappearded into the fog. Finally we were rescued by Steve from the bike rental company!

 Incredible Grand Canyon sunsets

Unbelievable slot canyons in South Antelope Canyon. You have to see them to truly appreciate them!

We seemed to see rainbows almost everyday, lots of storms in the distance made for some interesting views.

Box Canyon Ruins at Wupatki National Monument, 800 year old pueblo style buildings.

Katlyn (L) and Erin (R) at the start of the lava trail.
