FC: Aruba

1: The island of Aruba is part of the West Indies in the Caribbean Sea. - It is about 30 km (19 miles) long and 8 km (5 miles) wide - Area is about 193 sq. km (75 miles). - Population is 112,000. - Capital : Oranjestad, named after the Dutch Royal House of Orange.

3: The word Aruba derived from the word oibubai (guide), named by the Arawak Indians | In 1499 Spanish explorer Alonso de Ojeda laid claim to the territory. He christened the place Oro Hubo (meaning gold was there.)

4: The Spanish found no gold and ended up abandoning the island and it became a hide-away for pirates and buccaneers who preyed on ships transporting Indian treasures back the the Old World. The ruins of an old pirate castle still remain on Bushiribana. | The oldest building in the country is known as a historic fortress Fort Zoutman and William III Tower. | In 1924 they discovered gold near Bushiribana. This gold rush continued until 1916, when it became unprofitable.

5: Soon after the gold mines were shut down they discovered another valuable commodity, Black Gold - oil. Aruba then became home to one of the largest refineries. | Economy

6: Aruba's two main industries are tourism and oil. Aruba continues to invest heavily in tourist development.

8: World-renowned beaches along the west coast. Dive into our turquoise Caribbean waters, kissed by the sun and cooled by trade winds. Our beaches are secluded and off the beaten path along the coast afford magnificent panoramas. Explore the natural wonders throughout Arikok National Park. Walk through the history at the Bushiribana gold mill, museums in downtown Oranjestad, (which include the new state-of-the-art Archaeology Museum and Numismatic Museum) and our Butterfly and Ostrich Farms.
