14: Fraser Island is considered to be the largest sand island in the world at 1840 km. The island has rainforests, eucalyptus woodland, mangrove forests, wallum and peat swamps, sand dunes and coastal heaths. It is made up of sand that has been accumulating for approximately 750,000 years on volcanic bedrock.

15: Unlike many sand dunes, plant life is abundant due to the naturally occurring mycorrhizal fungi present in the sand, which release nutrients in a form that can be absorbed by the plants.

The sandstone formation stands 348 m (1,142 ft) high with most of its bulk lying underground, and has a total circumference of 9.4 km (5.8 mi). Both Uluru and the nearby Kata Tjuta formation have great cultural significance for the Aangu people, the traditional inhabitants of the area. Uluru is notable for appearing to change colour at different times of the day and year, most notably glowing red at dawn and sunset.

108: Mud pools are an icon of New Zealand scenery. They form where steam and gas rise to the surface under rainwater ponds. The acidic gases attack surface rocks, forming clay. The clay-rich soil mixes with the pond water to produce a muddy, steam-heated slurry, or mud pool. | Rotorua, North Island, New Zealand

109: Rotorua | The gases escaping from fumaroles can be rich in hydrogen sulfide. When the hot gases come into contact with the atmosphere they cool and oxidise, and can form yellow crystals of pure sulfur around fumarole vents.
