FC: Backpacking Through Europe Summer 2009

1: Girl Trip to Europe | During the summer of 2009 I was studying abroad in Morocco, Lauren was studying abroad in France, and Noel was studying abroad in Greece. When our classes ended, we met up with our friends Brittany and Kamille in London for the adventure of a lifetime! We say that we "backpacked through Europe", although we really "suitcased" through it, as none of us know the meaning of packing light! This was our journey through England, France, Austria, Italy, and Greece!

2: Our First Stop: London, England We started our trip with a lovely picnic lunch in Hyde Park and then we spent the day (my 24th birthday!) exploring more of London. Next stop: Buckingham Palace!

6: HARRODS is a world-famous department store in London. Obviously, we had to make a stop for some shopping! They had an enormous candy store which Noel & I were especially excited about.

8: The day continued with a visit to the Tower of London. It was crazy to think about all that took place there in history. It still felt eerie!

10: Our bags are full. | London | July 15 2009

11: I enjoyed watching the guards and the "changing of the guards". As the clouds started rolling in and rain began to fall, we took shelter at Starbucks. The first one I'd been to in months!

12: The London Eye | LONDON

15: At the end of my first day in London (Kamille, Noel, and Brittany had arrived several days before and did some exploring of their own), we headed to my brother's home in Chorleywood, a small town only 30 minutes outside of London. He and Aimee surprised me with a lovely and delicious birthday cake!

16: I enjoyed spending time with James and Mandy as they showed me around Chorleywood. It was such a quaint and pretty little town and we were excited to see more of the not-so-touristy spots of England. James took us to a small pub where the locals were friendly and we got to experience the traditional fish & chips.

20: Our next stop on our trip was Paris, France. Even though I had been there many times before, it was extra fun to be there with my friends. We started with a walk & dinner on the Champs Elysees.

23: Paris, France | July 17, 2009

26: We took the train from Paris to Vernon and then a bus from Vernon to Giverny to visit Monet's Home & Gardens, a place I hadn't been to since I was six years old. I had much more appreciation this time around. We felt like we were actually in one of Monet's paintings. Other visitors must have thought we were crazy because we took non-stop pictures -- so many photo ops!

32: After our visit to Monet's Gardens, we realized that the next bus wouldn't take us back to Vernon in time for us to make our train back to Paris. This sweet guy offered to drive us to Vernon himself. We still missed our train but enjoyed our spontaneous afternoon in Vernon.

34: There are few things I love more in this world than French pastries! YUM!

35: Pastry Shop | Vernon, France | July 18, 2009

36: PARIS We returned to Paris, re-united with Lauren, and spent the day walking along the Seine, taking pictures in front of the Eiffel Tower, and exploring the Louvre.

44: After Paris we took the train to Austria, but not before a pit-stop in Zurich, Switzerland. While we were there we ate dinner & I had the BEST coffee of my life. Our Swiss waiters were so sweet. We will have to make another trip to Switzerland so we can spend more time there!

46: Salzburg, Austria

48: Sound of Music Tour | SALZBURG

62: On our way from Salzburg to Venice, we switched trains in Vienna, Austria. We walked through the city as fast as we could and then stopped for a quick dinner before we were off again.

65: sydney harbor bridge | VENICE AND MURANO, ITALY It is nearly impossible to pick a favorite part of our trip to Europe but if I had to pick one, it would probably be Venice, Italy. In our sleeper car on the way to Venice, we met a sweet Christian girl named Jen, who is from Seattle. We had a great time exploring Venice with her. We spent much of our first day in Murano where we watched glass blowers make the famous Murano glass,.Then we took our water taxi back to Venice where we danced in St. Mark's Square, took a gondola ride, and explored the city.

70: St. Mark's Square | Venice, Italy

71: Our first dinner in Venice was to die for! The pizza truly was something to rave about and the wine! Still the best wine I've had!

72: Gondola Ride | VENICE

76: Second Day in Venice

84: Since we most of what we wanted to see on our first two days in Venice, we spent the last day relaxing by the water and drinking bellinis in St. Mark's Square.

87: After a crazy train ride from Venice to Naples (we had to get off the train in the middle of nowhere at around 1am because someone was found dead on the train!) we took a ferry boat from Naples to the Island of Capri. When we first arrived, we swam into the blue grotto, a beautiful turquoise underwater cave. While swimming in, I sliced my foot open on some sharp rocks, but luckily our new friend Robert from Virginia came to my rescue and bandaged up my foot!

88: Capri, Italy

94: Capri, Italy | July 24, 2009

95: Our Italian friend Antonio was our taxi driver from the ferry to our hotel. We met up with him (and his cousin Anthony) later at the beach & they invited us to drinks with them. We also brought our friend Robert along.

96: Fish dinner at Antonio's house.

98: AYRES ROCK/ULURU the world's largest monolith and an Aboriginal sacred site is Australia's most famous natural landmark. | Rome, Italy

101: We spent our first day in Rome touring the Colloseum!

102: Rome, Italy | July 27, 2009

103: The gelato in this shop wound around the entire room! We had so many options, we had to get five scoops each!

110: Lauren's Birthday Celebration

111: At the restaurant Lauren picked for her birthday celebration, we did not choose our meal. The sweet old lady who cooks is the house "mama" and she chooses what to serve her guests. It was delicious!

112: On our last day in Rome we visited the Trevi Fountain, went inside the Pantheon, and ate all the gelato we could get our hands on!

117: Athens, Greece | August 1, 2009 | From Rome, we flew to Athens, Greece. On our first day in Athens we went to the .... museum, shopped in Athens market, and had a delicious mousaka dinner accompanied by an accordian player. The next day, we went to the Parthenon.

122: Find the name of this

126: Athens. Greece | August 2, 2009

127: We had a blast taking pictures amongst Athens' ancient ruins.

130: Our last stop on our trip was the island of Hydra in Greece. It was so nice to wind down with a day at the beach before we had to fly home!

136: We had such a blast on our Euro Trip that we were sad to leave!
