S: Germany Austria Switzerland 2010
BC: Mozartplatz, St. Gilgen
FC: Two Sisters Two Couples Too Much Fun! | 2010
This is the 2nd Rick Steves' tour we've taken with my sister Cathie and bro-in-law Cory. A perfect way to get together! Cathie chose this trip -- our genealogy is full of German ancestry, What better way to learn about this history-rich part of the world... | Tom & Connie | Cathie and Cory
Trier and the Mosel Valley | A German herself, our guide Daniela was a no-nonsense, fun-loving wealth of knowledge. We learned so much! City tours are a favorite, and the bright-eyed Brigitta walked us through the Dom, Market Square, Porta Nigra and all about the town... | Daniela | Brigitta in the Dom
'Enchanting' is the best word to describe the Mosel Valley. We lunched in Beilstein, enjoying views of the riverfront and hillside vineyards. Our 'slice of time' tour through Burg Eltz was awesome.
Baden-Baden | I think my Tom was actually the only one who went full-out (monty) with the Roman Irish bath. There is a wonderful vibe here with the casino, spas and glorious walk along the Oosbach river.
Black Forest | Vogtsbaurenhof was a classic hands-on experience and glimpse of the past.
Switzerland | Honestly -- our time in Switzerland is the first thing that comes to mind when people ask about our tour. "It looks just like the postcards" I say. | Cow Culture in Murren
Cath and Cory swoon over the fondue | Accordion Serenade
Luzern | On our second day in Switzerland, Daniela took us for an outing to Luzern. Super city tour and sightseeing, also the stop at Trummelbach Falls was unforgettable.
Lindau | A wonderful 'through the back door' city, we spent an enjoyable afternoon in Lindau on our way to Bavaria.
Munich | Cathie mentioned that she felt a real 'connection' to Germany in Munich. It is a lively city, full of color -- AND soccer fans wearing lederhosen! | Kathleen, our excellent city guide
Rowdy soccer fans shake the train! | Glockenspeil Jig | Fabulous Alte Pinakotheh Gallery | "Songs filled the air as did groans at the end of the game. Bayern Munich lost 2-0, what a shame! Biergartens were out of white bratwurst at the end of the day. Munich is “Wonderbar”, but Salzburg is calling let’s get on the way." | Excerpt from our tour group poem...
Salzburg | This city is magical, its medieval roots lovingly preserved along Old Town streets. Such variety here -- castle, fountains, chocolates, concerts! | Mirabell Gardens | Love these chewy pretzels...
Bus driver's Birthday today! | Hallstatt | A boat ride on Lake Wolfgang then on to idyllic Hallstatt. | Cory, Cathie & I visit the Salt Mine -- Tom chose the Bone Chapel.
We asked Daniela to share with us her German perspective on the Third Reich, WW II, and postwar German identity. She generously did so. It was a candid and compelling discussion. | Mauthausen | On day 12 we visit Mauthausen concentration camp. It was a very sobering experience. Tears were shed...
Vienna | Our first night in Vienna we attended the Strauss Mozart concert at the Kursalon. We were seated near the stage and had an awesome musical experience. | Fun at the farewell feast | Our 14 days at an end, we remember our (sometimes comic!) adventures together. Cory read the humble but hilarious group poem composition. Soon it is time to say Auf Wiedershen... until the next tour! | City Guide Wolfgang | Hofburg Treasury
