S: Youth Trip to MX
FC: Youth Trip to MX | Our
Loading up and setting off for Mexico! So much luggage! | Writing in the trip journal | Our journey begins...
The next morning we found ourselves just outside of Mexico. Still a ways to go, but the rise is anything but dull with this load. | We stopped in a KMart parking lot while a few went to find breakfast for the group, and the boys entertained us with gymnastics!
We breakfasted on the hodge-podge of food the breakfast buyers found 'round town. Moses was doubtful about his chicken, or maybe it was the trow? | And so the day (and the road) winds on...
Finally, we reach the borer into MX! | As usual, the border was a bit of a hassle requiring a great deal of time and even more patience. | Filling out the paperwork and seemingly endless forms.
While Chad finished up with customs, we hung out on the box protecting our luggage. The predatory peddlers milled hopefully below. | Back on the road and watching the scenery go by in town and country.
Coming into Samachici, our destination.! | The winding road made a whole loop. | The school turned house that we will share with the other team for the next week.
The next morning, there wasn't enough to keep all us girls busy at the work site so we helped around the house... | ...doing cleaning and preparing food... | ...then pulled out snacks and had a girls party in the dorm! No one is too old for Strawberry Shortcake books.
The house our group came to help build! | Hard at work on the future mission house.
Rain in the afternoon halted construction so... | ...we played running games inside in an empty side room!
We had supper at the cute little cafe across the street from the compound.
Unloading wood scraps from the work site to use as firewood. | Making Breakfast
Sunday afternoon drive. Jumping on a swinging bridge like so many monkeys and watching the locals.
Playing a furious game of SWAT!
Sabrina, Tasha, and I spent most of one day doing the mounds of Laundry! | The washer was a bit tricky to run, but we soaked up sunshine and had a mini water fight!!!
Between loads we lazily watched Becca, Annie, and Patty as they scrubbed tiles at the work site. | A few of the other girls decided to try their hand at laundry the local way.
An old peddler woman brought her handwoven and beaded wares to the door. | After supper, we often played Dutch Blitz. A brand new deck of cards was ruined from so much use in one week!
Singing with the guitar and piano. | Playing the Bible reference game. Good practice!
Another local missionary family needed someone to chauffeur them back to their home located in the Canyon. Allen volunteered to drive them and Becca, Matt, and I, got to be the lucky three to ride along! | The road wasn't even one lane wide with a rock wall on one side and a sheer drop off on the other.
We stopped along the way to explore this cave the family was familiar with. | It was dark and there was bats hanging from the ceiling directly above our heads but it was fun!
The view and scenery was so beautiful!
We were informed that this truck had plummeted from the bridge above three days earlier but no one was hurt. | This pretty waterfall was tumbling down the rocks along the road.
The winding road we drove along for five hours. | The jagged peaks and rushing water made an awe inspiring view!
After we got back we helped the girls from the other team make Tamales.
Since it was LeAnn's birthday, we had a special supper and decorated a cake. Of course she loved the hat...
Playing Gossip and Dutch Blitz. | "Killer Winks". That game kept us laughing!
Playing Pig 'N' Donkey. Juvenile, yes, but oh so fun!
It rained and the entire house site was flooded. | The men worked hard and accomplished a lot in that week.
Becca and I took our turn helping at the work site. We pulled the job of insulating! | Becca managed to smash her thumb with the stapler but otherwise we had a blast!
Headed home, passing through towns again. We decided to stop in and see the family we helped the time before. | The church we helped to finish when our team last came. It was great to see how it was blessing the community.
Someone opened the emergency escape window accidently but managed to keep it from falling onto the highway 'til we pulled over. It helped to keep things lively. | One last check point before we get to the border. The beautiful sunset brought our trip to a fitting close.
We stopped for supper at a cute Mexican restaurant before crossing the border. | Our whole group posing for a last goodbye picture.
