S: Boundary Waters Canoe Area - 2011

FC: Boundary Water Canoe Area July 2011 Rich, Bill, Jim, Chris, Sean, and Kevin

The BWCA crew Sean, Jim, Chris, Rich,Bill, Chris, Jim, Rich, Bill, and Kevin

Sean and Jim decide they better check in with the home front before heading out into the unknown tomorrow morning. Surely there is nothing to worry about!

Time to get in a little fishing instructions before getting on the water in the morning, but is Bill instructing Kevin or is it the other way around? Let's see who catches the biggest and meanest fish. Rich, on the other hand, requires no lessons.

The crew settles into the bunk house the night before the big adventure, packing up personal supplies and checking the fishing gear. Chris is outside checking on the bear traps.

The NCCO outfitters lake side docks. We got our first time on the water shortly after checking in.

Sean and Jim taking the lead on day one on Lake Isabella. You can probably guess how the next few days went with these guys in the lead.

Our first portage landing. It was like none of us had ever done this before. First we tried to portage via a camp site, then we realize three canoes don't fit on a four foot wide trail, but we are learning.

The fun part of the portages, posing for pictures!!! I don't really think Kevin carried two packs in one trip, did he? Sean and Jim on the portage trail. Are they still leading the group?

There are two sides to every portage. Here we have just reloaded the canoes and are ready to push off again, provided Sean gives the green light. Kevin looks to be having a good time, is that because Chris is doing all of the paddling?

I think this is where Rich and Bill decided the youngsters of the group where moving too slow and decided to take the lead.

Day #1 on Lake Isabella. Great weather, beautiful scenery, highly skilled canoeist. Well, two out of three ain't bad.

Kevin and Chris view some of the rapids that we needed to portage around, while Jim and Sean instantly bonded.

Kevin, taking another break......camp site teamwork...Jim and Sean pulling in to a portage...Isabella River.

One morning it got a little foggy. It was much worse than these pictures show. At one point, one could bearly see across the lake to the opposite shore.

 More lake pictures.

Jim let his guard down and Kevin and Sean got into the food supply. This was soon to be one of our more adventurous meals.

We had no bears, wolves, or moose, but every now and then this creature with no hair dropped by to visit our camp. Notice how Bill just ignores him.

Remember the movie 'Deliverance'? Now look closely at the two characters above. Anyone got a banjo? Oh, and that's dinner cooking on the left. Yummy, yummy.

The guy on the left just came walking out of the swamps. He must have smelled the great dinner being prepared by the master chef.

Pictures of life at the camp site. As you can see, everyone had their own special set of skills. If you have no skills, then perhaps that explains why you are missing from these pictures. Sean seems to be amazed by the fire.

Our cook was a person of many talents and our fire maker was very valued, but learned that wet wood trumps fire anyday.

They go out and hunt for food each day, then they prepare the kill with the world's dullest knife. Oh well, at least the birds ate well.

Was the first of many kills? The hunters do a little showing off for the camera. Hey, anyone see Chris or Sean? | I climbed a tree to take this picture. Please don't ask why.

Today Bill and Rich went out on their own to explore new lands and hunt for the clan. Of course they got lost and had leader Chris very worried. While back at camp Kevin and Sean take turns on guard duty. Do you feel safe?

Sean, I am sorry to say that you are in danger of not making the short list for next year's adventure. We just are not used to someone bringing their work to these outtings. If you needed something to do, we could always use an extra person to watch Bill.

While Sean washes dishes and Kevin supervises, Jim and Rich thumb wrestle. Where's Bill when you need him?

Ever wonder what is for dinner at the camp site? Well, wonder no more and feast your eyes on the plate to the left.

Our final camp site, eating dinner on our Lazy Boy Logs. Thanks go to Bill and Rich for catching the fish dinner and to Jim for cooking.

Jim our designated cook, feeding Kevin and Rich. Of course, after dinner, someone must do the dishes. Sean even appears to be enjoying himself, as Kevin insures the proper technique is used.

Bill trying to figure out a piece of modern technology. Just 'point and shoot', but please don't drop it in the lake, we know you have that skill mastered.

A view of our last lake and portage landing. I believe this is Lake Gabro.

The official movie maker of the group. I expect to see this on the National Geographic Channel in the near future. Oh, I forgot, that is our pancake eating turtle visitor. See Jim, someone likes your cooking.

The turtle just could not get enough of the pancakes and for some reason here is another picture of Kevin with his catch. Kevin, remember to tell the story about the big one that got away.

We did some exploring on our final night in Ely. Here is a local river waterfall. I forget the name but I did remember it was loud.

Chris, on the dock at White Iron Lake, just before sunset on our final night in Ely. Kevin chose to get in a little more fishing on this final night and I watched and learned the fine art of retrieving one's lure from multiple snags. Tomorrow morning we make to long trek back to KC.

We made it back home and we are all still standing, even though most of us had some sort of foot 'issue'. Thanks again for the van Jim, we drove in style this trip. Hey Rich, is that part of your home made poncho at your feet? We can only wonder where Sean might be at this time.

The only equipment damage. Hey Rich, will you be bringing this on next year's adventure? Let the planning start..
