FC: The Smythe's/Kelley's go to England 2011

Big Ben, Parliament (above), Shankly Gates (below) | ...and Liverpool... | We were off to London...

Bath (insets) and Stonehenge (duh) | ...and a couple of places inbetween.

The trees were in full bloom on our street! | First, we made ourselves at home at 22 Balfe Street...

 ...a wonderful 4-story townhouse built in 1825...

...with a private "secret garden" in the back. | 22 Balfe Street

The first night, we all woke up in the middle of the night thinking it was morning. We had to be ready for our tour at 5am, so nobody got much sleep! Bright and early, we were off to... | The master bedroom

...Stonehenge!... | After a rough start involving a kid with motion sickness and some time rinsing out clothes in the lovely Stonehenge bathroom, we had a wonderful time!

We had a "special access" tour of Stonehenge. Early in the morning, before the site opened to the public, we got to walk amongst the stones. | In order to protect the ancient stones, access to the actual site is rare. Our tour was led by the very knowledgeable and ebullient guide, Paul (with Paul, left).

...Lacock... | Lacock is a pretty little town on the English national heritage list. It has been preserved to remain an "old English" town in appearance. | Parts of Harry Potter movies were filmed here!

After a traditional English breakfast (baked beans?!), we walked the town.

...and, finally, Bath. | Poor Petra had been sick on the early morning bus ride to Stonehenge. She wore Nana's coat until we could finally get her some new clothes in Bath!

After our first very eventful day, we were ready to return to London to explore.

The next few pages are some of the things we saw in London. | Changing of the guard.

Westminster Abbey | The London Eye | Honest Abe in old England

 Houseboats on the canal

Parliament | Big Ben | Millennium Bridge

Outside Westminster Abbey | Westminster Abbey ceiling

Countdown clock until the 2012 summer olympics with National Gallery in the background | After a few days of sightseeing, it was time to split up for a bit.

The Smythe's were off to Liverpool...

Oscar and Petra "signing" lucrative contracts! | see Anfield, the stadium of our favorite soccer club, Liverpool... | Keep off the pitch!

The players touch this sign on the way out to the pitch for good luck.

The gates of Strawberry Fields | ...and some Beatles sites...

George Harrison's boyhood home | The "Magical Mystery Tour" bus

...while the Kelley's delved deeper into the sites and museums of London.

Oscar and Petra in front of a soldier guarding the crown jewels. | Oscar with the Tower Bridge behind him. | Some of our other favorite things to see and do in London included...

... the Tower of London (the Smythe's)... | The White Tower, Oscar in front of a former moat.

...Camden Market, including a canal tour on the Jenny Wren... | Manually opening the floodgate for the lock.

Oscar and Dave at the big Arsenal match. | ... soccer matches (Dave, Oscar and Tia)...

...finding fossils on the shores of the Thames (Boppa, Nana, Oscar and Petra)... | ...double decker buses and pink limos...

...seeing Wicked at a West End theater (Petra and Tia)... | ...playing 500 and rejuvenating back at 22 Balfe Street...

...walking through the magic wall to Platform 9 3/4 at King's Cross station...

 ...and, generally...

...just being goofy and having a great time!

So there you have it. Unforgettable!
