1: The idea was to find 'critters'. And what better place in the world is there than the Galapagos Islands? We flew via Santiago, Chile then to Guayaquil, Ecuador and finally out to Baltra Island in the Galapagos Archipelago. We boarded the La Pinta and began the most extraordinary week of our lives. Each day was packed with grand experiences of animals: amazing birds that defy description, marine creatures of all shapes and sizes and famous creatures like Lonesome George (the last Galapagos Tortoise of his type). All these animals were unafraid of humans and allowed us up close. Very close! We cruised around the western half of the Galapagos Islands and crossed the Equator four times. Some islands were ancient in their formation while others had lava flows only a few years old. Most of the islands were uninhabited although many had evidence of mariners from centuries ago. It wasn't hard to imagine that our experience of the critters wasn't too much different from Charles Darwin in HMS Beagle in 1835. Overall a fabulous experience happily shared with Stu and Fay Knibbs. Roger and Patricia 8-15 June 2012
