BC: A Trip of a LIFETIME...
FC: Kauai | March 2010 | ___
& | Kauai Marriott Resort Beach Club | and
 Wailua Falls
THE Big HIKE | Our very first excursion in Kauai was to hike to the bottom of Wailua Falls. After a bit of a bit of steep hiking with the aid of a system of ropes, we reached the bottom and were rewarded with a swim under the falls. We promised Nana that the rest of our trip would be more relaxing.
 Allerton Garden
Angel's Trumpet. We were told that mothers with crying infants would put them under these plants because the fragrance induced sleep. | Moreton Bay Fig- The trees used in the movie Jurassic Park
 Waimea Canyon
 Na Pali Coast
The guide books are not exaggerating when they tell you not to attempt this drive without 4WD. The scariest "maintained" road we have ever seen.
 Spouting Horn
A local man named Julio taught both Matthew and Lauren to surf in the Kalapaki Bay right outside of our resort.
The lithified sand dunes of Maha'ulepu are a stunning testament to the power of the ocean
 SOUTH Shore SIGHTS...
We passed groves of Moluccan Albizia Trees each as we drove to the South Shore . Although beautiful to look at, they are considered an invasive species that is threatening native plants and wetlands.
The Old Koloa Sugar Mill .The field in front of the mill where sugar cane once was grown is covered in a blanket of wild daisies.
 Na 'Aina Kai Botanical Gardens
 South Shore Sights
Our favorite places on the North shore were Kilauea Lighthouse and Secret Beach.. It was about a 10 minute hike down to the most beautiful beach we have ever seen. We walked for miles and explored the rocks and tide pools and saw only one other person the entire time we were there.
 Hawaii Chicks
The hurricanes have resulted in the domestic chickens running rampant through the island.
 Snuba Lawa'i Beach
Snuba is similar to scuba diving in that you are breathing through a regulator, But your air tank floats above you on a raft and your hose only allows you to go to a depth of 20 feet.
No matter where we happen to be on the Island, the sunsets were always beautiful
 Glass Beach
Glass Beach makes a rotten first impression. It is in the industrial part 'Ele'ele backed by huge ugly tanks of gasoline. This beach is located near an old dump where bottles and metal used to be discarded. Factor in a time of disuse and the power of the ocean you end up with a beautiful tapestry of sand and multicolored glass. The discarded metal has rusted and developed a patina that is quite artistic. One of the most unusual beaches we have ever explored.
