FC: Rod & Elysia Napa Valley I & II June 2007 & July 2008

On April 21, 2008, after knowing each for about a month, Rod and Elysia decided it would be a great idea to go to Napa Valley to visit her dad. That night they bought tickets online.....for a June 21st flight. What happened in Napa Valley set the course for the rest of their lives together. Heres a few moments of it.

Lys at Target....First things first!!!! Rods first visit to Trader Joe's...."$1.99 each?? I love this place!!" | Siverado Resort.....home away from home...

On the way to wineries for the first time. | But before we hit the winreries.....we had to taste some 2 Buck Chuck!

On the way to wineries for the first time. | Rubicon Estates........the first Winery Lys and Rod ever visited. We had fun here. We realized that as long as you like to drink and talk to people, you will fit in anywhere. Except an AA meeting. It looks like Rod is dressed for an AA meeting though....wow. How did he get so lucky to get a woman like Elysia????

Lys trying a tasting in Rubicons Tasting Room....and Lys peeking behind closed doors!

Rod phoned ahead and let our B&B know that is was out First Anniversary...so can you do a little something special? This is what they did for us....

We would start our days in Yountville with Breakfast at Blue's Cafe, and go from there. The first day in Yountville we stayed in town; shopping, walking, and tasitng wine...

After a lunch at Hurleys and a long walk around Yountville, we found our way to Jessup Cellars. One tasting turned into a few hours of drinking wine with the awesome staff.....Lys had to throw Rod in the pool to get him ready for dinner with her Dad & Stepmom........

After the pool, we met with Steve and Jill. and went to Bistro Jeanty...these photos were taken after Dinner. Lys...do you remember them?

We went back the next day to take pictures of Bistro Jeanty. It was an amazing place!!! | Rod had the Tomato Soup in Puff Pastry, followed by the Steak Tartare. Lys had the Fries followed by the Quiche. All was unbelievably good food. For some reason though, noone would try the Steak Tartare....

Lys and Rod had a photo contest one afternoon in Yountville....hers are the Sunflower shots. They win....although my shot of French Laundry's garden is pretty sweet.

Another Day spent driving around the Valley and trying out new wineries. This is the Good Life.

Wine Country Inn in St Helena.

Steve & Jill picked us up and we headed to Mumm Napa for an afternoon tasting. Unfortunately, they were closing in 20 minutes, so it was more like an afternoon gulping, and we only got these few pictures from it. Ah well, guess we will have to go back next year.....

Jill took this picture of us after we did the tasting at Mumms........she made us take our sunglasses and my visor off... | Rod wasnt too happy about removing his visor... | But look at how good we look now!

The Martini House in St Helena. We both had the tasting menus, paired with wines. Rod went with the Mushroom Menu, and Lys with the Chefs Menu. Both were truly gourmet meals. This meal got Rod started on a culinary addiction...We showed up early, however, and were led to the basement Martini Lounge, for an hour or so of specialty martinis. Perhaps we had one or two too many.....

V Sattui Winery: We went in, tried a few wine samples, bought a few bottles of sparkling and red, some fantastic deli meats and cheeses from the Italian Deli, and found a table in the shade......

The Pengions were playing keep away with a leaf... | This little guy was afraid to chase them into the water..... | So he got fed up and left in a huff...

In order to save some cash, we rented a couple nights at a very inexpesive.....no, it was cheap....hotel in Napa City. We spent 10 minutes there, and couldnt bear to have it be the last place we stayed in Napa Valley...so Rod got on the phone with the Silverado Resort, and got a Townhouse Suite for a couple nights. The next day, after a horrible night in the motel, we went to Silverado....after stocking up at Trader Joes of course. Plenty of 2 Buck Chuck, cheeses, meats, salads, and veggies; we had an amazing day. We spent all day sitting outside enjoying the downtime.....

This is what we did all day. | Well, Lys did a lot of this.... | But Rod only did this.... | She saw a Vole running around....and decided to feed it.... | Very expensive Goat Cheese... | Evidence of a very satisfied Vole....

Oh ya.....Rod did a lot of this too....asking every single person who was headed to the Fourth Of July Fireworks where the best place to see the show was....and acting surprised when they said, "You're sitting in it!!!"

Our room in San Francisco... Very tiny, but what else do you need?? We had just seen the movie 1410... the hallway was very spooky. | We went for dinner in the Italian Section, and ordered a plate of Mussels for an appy. Lys tried one, and told Rod they were bad, so she wouldnt eat anymore. Rod said, Awesome, more for me. She meant bad, as in spoiled. And Rod got very ill that night and the next morning...

 Final view of San Franscisco....

Napa Valley II July 2008 | This time around, we did it in Style.....Steve and Jill knew Rod was the man for Lys, so they let us stay in there house in Yountville, as well as drive their car!! Along with the old favorites like Blu's Cafe, Arger Martucci, Mumms, and Bistro Jeany, we saw a lot more of the country.... Carmel, Monterey Bay, and most importantly, Ad Hoc!!!

We wasted no time gettig comfortable at Steve and Jills place in Yountville...porch, cocktail, and reading in the shade. AKA, "The Good Life". | Flying in to San Francisco for the second trip...and it looked HOT. This is overlooking the valley, you can also see the smoke layer from all the fires. | Steve and Jills backyard. Not bad.

We couldnt believe how lush and well taken care of everything was....untill we saw the hordes of Mexican groundskeepers buzzing away at the front yards...

The first morning we woke up and took the bikes down to Blue's Cafe for breakfast and mimosas.....when in Rome, right?

More shots of the neighbourhood. I couldnt get used to the vine bush for lawn idea....

Once again, Arger Martucci! Definately the best winery in the Valley. We spent a little longer here this time, doing a tasting wth one of the staff who joined us for an hour or so, sitting on the patio, enjoying the wine, company, olive oil, and amazing view.

More wineries....we had a blast at Provenance, where we bought some wine and Lys found the chair of her dreams....a lounger made of old Barrel staves. One day....

Back to the house for some relaxing before dinner.....I put up a Wasp trap and watched it for hours. Fascinating stuff.

We woke up at around 5:30am Saturday morning to drive to Carmel, where Steve holds estate auctions. We borrowed the truck and went for a drive down 10 Mile Drive and saw amazing scenery...Pebble Beach, the coast.....and obvious signs of the recession. at least 1 out of 3 houses was for sale on the drive.

The Monterey Bay Aquarium. If there is an aquarium, Lys and I have to go check it out.

We woke up Early Sunday morning to go for a bike ride before we went for Breakfast (at Blue's of course).

Once again we went to Rubicon to try the wine.....it way too expensive to go there, but also too good to pass up. Shots of Napa Style, a very cool Kitchen store in Yountville, run by Michael Chirello....who is an extremely talented chef from Napa.

Sipping champagne (ok, Sparkling Wine) at Mumms once again, and then off to dinner at Ad Hoc. This was a life changing dinner for Rod. I have never eaten so well, or experienced a restaurant like this. There is the menu, you eat what they decide to cook. Lys said we should try doing a dinner party like that.......I said it would be pretty hard not to, as I dont think I can pull of menu choices for 8 different people....

The last day of the trip....we were both a little...tired...from the night before at Breakfast. So, we sat there for a while, then went to the pool and relaxed until it was time to leave......
