FC: OUR YELLOWSTONE ADVENTURE | June 12-22 2011
After a long day of plane travel to Utah, a stop for groceries and a 4 hour car ride, we arrived at our cabin on Henry's Lake...our home away from home. A momma moose and her baby were out to meet us as was the most beautiful rainbow. What a start! | We were also greeted by millions--yes, millions of lake flies. They were annoying but at least they did not bite like mosquitoes
Day 1: Our adventure begins! We are up early and off to Yellowstone National Park west entrance. We get our first glimpse of a bison herd, the boys sign up for their junior ranger badges and we learn about Uinta squirrels. We visit the Fountain Paint pots and Midway Geyser Basin.
We had a picnic lunch in the rain while waiting for Old Faithful. | The boys enjoyed snow in June
The rain finally caught up to us at Biscuit Basin. After an exciting day of beautiful sites we headed home tired and hungry.
DAY 2: We headed north to Big Sky Montana for some white water rafting. A rock climbing wall was an added bonus. | Matthew, Michael and even Aunt Jeni tried their hand at rock climbing
Grampy, Karen and Jeni opted to try to the rapids. | Daddy and the boys are ready for the scenic tour...where's Grammy? | A view of the Gallatin Mountain Range | We say goodnight with a full moon
DAY 3: Another busy day at Yellowstone. First stop-Norris Geyser Basin and the mud pots
It was a long hike to see the upper and lower falls
Next, we went to the fishing bridge, Grand Canyon of Yellowstone and threw rocks on the beach at Lake Yellowstone. | WE SPOTTED OUR FIRST GRIZZLY BEAR!!!
 Definitely not swimming weather today!
White Dome Geyser | We ended our day at the Great Prismatic Springs and the White Dome Geyser
A bison came across the path and took a mud bath just feet away from us.
DAY 4: Today we took a ride up the road to see all the big fish that were known to gather at Big Spring. Who would have guessed that the seagulls beat us to them. We took a nice hike and spent a fun day playing in the river. | The boys played by the dock for hours throwing rocks and catching fish.
Poor Michael met the pavement face first
DAY 5: We drove to Jackson Hole and explored the town a bit. We then headed over to the ski hill and took the tram to the top of the mountain. Once there, we climbed a snow hill and had some crepes and hot chocolate.
We stopped at Jenny Lake and took a boat ride across the lake to a hiking trail. We saw more moose there while hiking. Matthew, Jeni and Karen hiked back around the lake while everyone else returned by boat.
Our second Grizzly--even closer! | Sacred Heart Chapel
Day 6: Today we celebrated Aunt Jeni"s birthday by floating down the Snake River. | Who's working here??
A wonderful birthday surprise. | We went to mass at Little Church in the Pines | Western Tanagers ate the bugs on our porch
DAY 7: Father's Day. It was a rainy morning and we visited the Grizzly and Wolf Discovery Center in West Yellowstone. | The boys learn how bears hold their poop during hibernation. | The ranger talked about what bears like to eat. Then the boys went into the habitat and hid food for the bears to find.
