FC: The Traveling Grenier Girls 2011

January - April // Amy volunteered in India May // Amy trekked in the Himalayas of Nepal | June - July // Jenn studied archeology in the mountains of Peru | June // Amy traveled in Ireland with a friend, then met Nan for travels in Scotland & France | In the year 2011, Amy and Jenn did a bit of exploring... | Stateside July to September, Amy went to New York City, South Carolina, and Canada before going to University in Brighton, UK.

In January, Amy traveled to Faridabad, India. Faridabad is a city ninety minutes outside of New Delhi in Northern India. Here, she lived with a host family and taught English as part of a women's empowerment project. | India

In India, the simple act of getting from point A to point B easily becomes an adventure.... | I got around town mostly by autorickshaw | This is me in between towns on the top bunk of a sleeper car in a train | Camel is not, actually, my preferred manner of travel. Rather uncomfortable.. And they're pretty gassy.

One of the first places Amy went to was the Taj Mahal in Agra, a few hours south of New Delhi.

Amy went to Jaipur and Jodhpur in the Rajasthan region of Northern India and explored palaces, forts, and the distinctive culture of the region.

One of Amy's family favorite places in India was Dharmasala at the base of the Himalyans. It is the location of the Tibetan government in exile and where theDalai Lama lives. Here, she attended the speech where the Dalai Lama resigned his political role and one of his public teachings. Dharmasala is also a lovely place for a day hike.

Amy spent her birthday week in Rishikesh, a town famous for its yoga. She ended up spending her birthday sitting on a rock in the middle of the Ganges with Ladubaba discussing philosophy and life. | After Rishikesh, she decided to make an impromptu trip back to Rajistan to visit Pushkar, a holy city in the middle of the dessert. Here, those innocent looking monkeys chased her across her hotel roof and that camel gave her a ride.

Nepal | Amy spent three weeks trekking the Annapurna Circuit in the Himalayas of Nepal. She spent about half that time at "Altitude" - or above 3,500 m. She reached a height of 5,416 m (about 17,769 ft) above sea level when she crossed Thorong La Pass . Waking up every day and not having to plan anything, just being able to walk and enjoy the scenery, was probably her favorite part of the six month trip.

Candace and Amy have been friends since the first year at Hollins. They met in Dublin with plans to walk the Dingle Way on the West Coast of Ireland. The plans changed due to illness (always fun when traveling).. They spent two days in Dublin, four days on the Dingle Penninsula, three in Killarney, one on Inis Oir (one of the Aran Islands), and two in Galway. | Ireland

 Scotland

 France

Peru | During the summer Jenn traveled to Peru in order to attend an archeology field school. She got to meet other archeology students and take part in excavations.

While in Peru Jenn stayed in the city of Moquegua. The city is in southern Peru and is situated in the foothills of the Andes. (Left - Fountain in downtown) (Top- The museum Jenn worked at)

While not working in the Museum or at the excavation site Jenn got to see some of the areas around Moquegua. | (Top - Beach in Ilo, Peru, a city on the coast) (Right - the View from Torata, a nearby town)

Ilo, Peru and the mountains around Moquegua

 More Photos of Peru

And Then... | Over the summer, Amy went to New Hampshire, New York, South Carolina, Canada, and the Maryland Renaissance Faire before crossing the pond to start her graduate studies at the University of Sussex in Brighton, United Kingdom. She plans on spending December in Greece. | Ottawa, Canada | Charleston, SC | Maryland Renaissance Faire | Stonehenge, UK | Seven Sisters, UK | Warwick Castle, UK

Jenn is continuing to rock climb and play on her school's Ultimate Frisbee team. Over fall break she took a trip to Mount Rogers in Virginia to go Backpacking
