Dec 2011: DECEMBER 2011

Dec 2011: In 1980 I was dreading the Christmas season because it would be the first Christmas after Bud's death. His cousin... invited me to California for a visit... I left early on Dec 26 for a ten day visit... It was an unforgettable trip and when I returned home. I began in January an exciting job as a news writer for the THE MECKLENBURG GAZETTE in Davidson.

Nov 2011: NOVEMBER 2011

Nov 2011: In 1991 the new SouthLake mission group continued to meet at my house until we rented buildings at SHOPS ON THE GREEN in Cornelius where we began to have worship service. | In 1955 we had our first son, Richard Howard Hampton, Jr. who was born on November 23. My employment at Belk's ended with his birth and I became a full time wife and mother.

Oct 2011: OCTOBER 2011

Oct 2011: In October of 1991, plans were formulating for a new mission to be called SouthLake. After almost a year of Bible studies in my home ( after the demise of Cowan's Ford.) Wade and Dorinda Malloy were asked by Presbytery to plant this new church at our location on Highway 73. An exciting time.

Sep 2011: SEPTEMBER 2011

Sep 2011: In 1984, as President of the Killian Clan, I am presiding over the 50th reunion at Castanea Presbyterian Church. As a 6 year old I attended the very first one in 1934 held in Newton. My ancestry goes back to Germany and Andreas Killian arrived in this country in 1732 aboard the ship ADVENTURE. What a heritage I have-- and on the 50th anniversary,Rev. Gaither Shrum spoke to us, especially about our kin in Lincoln County.

Aug 2011: AUGUST 2011

Aug 2011: In 1946, I graduated from Carolina Business School and went to work at Belk's Buying Office. My salary was $27.50 a week but my boss, W. A. Gilliland, quickly began raising my salary($2.50 a week) because he was pleased with my work. Soon I was also working for John Belk and he was my boss until 1955 when I had my first baby. What a dream job. | In 1976 I was working in the Admissions Office of UNCC in Charlotte. This was a busy time as registration for the fall term was happening. This was in the days before computers registricting and students had to stand in line for hours to get the classes they wanted. There were many frustrations for them and as a member of the Admissions Office. I had to help defuse a lot complaints. But I loved working with the students and stayed there from 1974 to 1977.

Jul 2011: JULY 2011

Jul 2011: In 1995 my beloved son Bob, passed away in California. He was 37 and most of his ashes were scattered near the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco: the rest were sent to me and buried a year later at Martha's Chapel.

Jun 2011: JUNE 2011

Jun 2011: In June of 1993, I traveled with Christian Tours to Niagara Falls. Known as the honeymoon city, I was there alone. (Wish Bud had been living at the time.) Although I was alone, the whole group wrapped me in their arms and I had a ball, even singing Rocky Top with Tennessee travelers on the trip. A big thrill was riding in a helicopter over those majestic falls (both American and Canadian).

May 2011: MAY 2011

May 2011: In 1946 I was a student at Carolina Business School where I received special awards for my shorthand and typing skills. My education there was free in exchange for grading papers and assisting the teachers with other duties. | In 1956 it was at Nevin Presbyterian Church that I accepted Christ as my Personal Saviour after hearing a sermon preached by Dr. Grady Wilson. Jesus has been my friend ever since that time.

Apr 2011: APRIL 2011

Apr 2011: In 1950 I was a new bride, having been married on April 15th at Martha's Chapel in Lincoln County. We had a beautiful wedding with ten bridesmaids dressed in pastel dresses of net. We honeymooned in Washington, D.C. | My 80th birthday was celebrated at SouthLake in 2008 along with the dedication of Hampton Hall. | In 1928 I was born on April 25, the youngest child of Jessie Claude Killian and Rena Sifford Killian. The doctor who delivered me was Dr. B. C. Taylor and he charged $5.

Mar 2011: MARCH 2011

Mar 2011: In 1981 I was a busy reporter for THE MECKLENBURG GAZETTE in DAVIDSON. My car was on the road constantly as I traveled all over North Mecklenburg interviewing people, taking pictures, and writing stories. It was wonderful meeting so many people and it was also the month that Hal Lackey came to my farm and spent the entire day photographing the old house in which I was born. What a treasure to have these pictures!

Feb 2011: FEBRUARY 2011

Feb 2011: In 1948 I attended a square dance in Huntersville with two girl friends. This is where I met Bud. Neither of us danced; we sat and talked the whole evening. It was love at first sight for me, but it was several weeks before he called me for a date. (And the rest is history.) | The year 1980 brought great sadness as Bud died suddenly of a heart attack on February 15th, just twelve days after my mother had died. Again in 1996, death claimed the life of my youngest son, John who passed away on February 7th (his father's birthday).

Jan 2011: JANUARY 2011

Jan 2011: In 1950 my engagement picture was in newspapers in Mt. Holly and Davidson. Richard Howard Hampton (Bud) had given me a diamond engagement ring for Christmas and we were planning our wedding for April.

BC: I hope that you will enjoy your calendar very much. I had fun doing it and getting a better chance to know your life. Love you for ever. by: Vicky Hyland 2010
