The San Jose Museum of Art is a museum of modern and contemporary art located in the heart of Silicon Valley-San Jose, CA. Established in 1969, its special focus is on West Coast art of the 2oth and 21st centuries. The museum professionals at SJMA work together to accomplish one mission: to reflect the diverse cultures and innovative spirit of Silicon Valley, connect the present and the past, and foster awareness of artists' broad contribution to society.
Upon entering the main entrance to the museum, one is greeted by someone at the Information Desk. For most visitors, the Museum Experience Representatives (MERs) are the first point of service at SJMA. They offer assistance with purchasing admission tickets as well as provide general information about the museum.
Here, the MER is assisting a museum patron and answering phone inquiries.
The Museum Store is often a major component of the museum, providing patrons an opportunity to buy items that are reflective of the exhibitions seen in the galleries. The Sales Associates are very knowledgeable about the merchandise sold in the store, and are helpful in highlighting items that are related to ongoing exhibitions, such as a coffee table book of an artist in a current exhibition.
The cafe had just closed on this visit but there were staff present, busy cleaning and closing down for the evening. Patrons are free to sit and lounge in the cafe even after it closes. Independent of the museum, this has become a space to gather and socialize while enjoying refreshments.
The main lobby area reflected the work of many different museum departments, including security, collections management, development, and visitors services. The lobby was free of any museum employees, but instead was occupied by various visitors enjoying the space.
