Plants | TED 120--Final Project | Digital Story by Hannah Logan Morris cover photo from http://galacticculture.files.wordpress.com/2009/08/seed2.jpg

peace lily seed | radish seeds | maple seeds | Let's start with the seed.

Every plant has a different seed.

Most seeds need to be in soil to grow.

After a time of germination, the seed begins to sprout.

 The seed grows roots first.

These are the roots of an oak tree. Roots are usually underground.

Then the plant begins to grow its new shoot, and eventually, leaves.

 Baby plants are called seedlings.

Here are the four basic parts of a mature plant. | The roots help the plant get water and nutrients from the soil. The stem carries it up to the leaves. The leaves make the plant's food from the sun's energy. And the flowers...

 ...help the plant reproduce.

Flowers have male and female parts to create a new seed. This is called fertilization.

The male part is called pollen, and the female part is the ovum.

Many animals help spread pollen from plant to plant.

Some plants are pollinated by the wind.

Not all plants have flowers, though. | Some have cones, like a pine tree. The seeds are inside the cone.

Ferns have spores, which are like seeds.

Once the ovum is fertilized, the flower forms fruit, which has the seeds inside.

The fruit drops to the ground, where the seeds can begin to grow. Then the life cycle of the plant begins all over again.
