FC: Pesticide | LIVE A BETTER LIFE, WITHOUT PESTICIDES ! | BY: Sabrina Cao
What is pesticide? | Pesticide is a kind of toxic chemical mixture that is used to get rid or prevent certain pests, or living creatures that disturbs humans. For example, rats, weeds, cockroaches fungi, are all living thing human want to kill, and pesticides do that.
How do pesticides work? | Different types of pesticides work in different ways, some prevents pests, and some kinds kill them. | Direct Contact Some pesticides kill pests by making direct contact with them. The pest absorbs the spray through their body surface or by exposed plant tissues. | Secondary Contact Pesticide may be sprayed onto a surface where the pest is going to pass, and that makes the pest to make secondary contact with the spray.
Repellent Repellent pesticides repel or keep pests away from a certain area. This chemical mixture contains a certain smell or chemical that the pest hates, so they won't proceed into that area anymore. It is used commonly for repelling ants or other house pests. | Ingested When the pesticide chemical mixture is mixed into food the pest eats, the chemicals travel into the pest's digestive system and flow into their bloodstream. And that kills the pest. | Fumigant Fumigant pesticides have a smell that either repel or kills the pest. Some fumigant are only harmful to the pest it's dealing with, but some are harmful to humans, too. | Lure and Kill Lure and kill, or commonly known as bait, is one of the most common ways to kill pests in households. The pesticide usually lure the pest nearby by spreading a likable smell, and kills it when it makes contact.
A Real Life Example | Pesticide is used all around us. You may not know, but it is used all around the world everyday, in farms, lands that are ready for building houses, and even in your own house. As I observed, pesticide was used in the farm that was right on Major Mackenzie. The food you're eating may contain pesticide chemicals that may harm humans. Do you think pesticide is a safe method?
Short Term Impacts on the Environment | When pesticide is sprayed onto a plant, or a specific area, the sprayed compound mixture may evaporate into the atmosphere, or travel down underground water pipes, which is an important source of water fore human. Soluble pesticides may easily mix with water and contaminate our drinking source.
Long Term Effects | When pesticide travel through the ground and mix with the nearby lakes or underground water frequently, and the amount of solute (pesticide mixture) in the solvent (lake, river or underground water) increases, it will make our water source be contaminated with pesticide and it will be come a concentrated solution. If humans eat an animal that had inhaled or drank contaminated water or air, will get severe syndromes such as Parkinson disease and breast cancer.
Effects on Human and Wildlife | Drinking pesticide contaminated water, breathing in pesticide contaminated air and eating products that still have leftover pesticide on it can give both humans and animals serious syndromes and diseases. Some possible outcomes are getting Parkinson disease, Breast Cancer, comas, and birth problems. If the pesticide is strong enough, it can also kill its victim.
How safe is the use of pesticide? | It's approved by scientists that if pesticide is handled properly, disposed properly, and used occasionally, it will do no harm to the environment. But if pesticide is used frequently and using a large amount every time, it will be contaminating the lakes and water source near by. | It is NOT safe for anybody to make physical contact with the pesticide mixture, it contains toxic which is highly flammable and poisonous. You should not using things that had touched pesticides to touch any other products. And you should definetly not drink the mixture, that may cause you the most painful death.
Disposing Pesticides | The proper way to dispose a can of used pesticide is not by dumping the remainder down a sink, a toilet, down a sewer or into a storm drain. Because all that chemical will mix in with the water source that we drink from. I don't think you will like the idea that the water you're drinking everyday is poisonous. You should not be dumping the can of pesticide near lake, stream or river, so wild animals do not die because of you. You should be asking your regional garbage disposal of where to dump your used pesticide cans to avoid further harm for our environment and your health.
