Okonkwo - Page Text Content

BC: "Okonkwo's suicide is symbolic of the self-destruction of the tribe, for he was a symbol of the power and pride that the tribe had and with its demise, the tribe's moral center and structure gave way to a more dominant one. With his death, the old way of life is gone forever." | http://www.ncat.edu/~student3/pt3/GP14/the_novel.htm | Written by Frances on Saturday, April 02, 2011 http://www.francesfox.com/mantras/essuicide-wave-suicidal-thoughts/

3: Okonkwo is the main character in T.F.A. His father is the opposite of what he wants to be. He has three wives, who suffer many beatings, and eight children. His son Nwoye doesn't meet his standards. Okonkwo isn't very loving or caring, and often looses his temper. Although he probably has a soft side, nobody sees it.

4: Above is a picture that shows how Okonkwo's feelings are towards Nwoye.

5: Ikemefuna: Is a boy given over to Okonkwo's village as a hostage after a murder. He is well liked by Okonkwo and tries to make Nwoye as masculan as he is. His life was indeed short, but he brought out a side in Okonkwo that nobody had ever seen. (Achebe 61).

6: "'Okonkwo was as slippery as a fish in water' /'He was called 'The Cat' because his back never touched the ground.'

9: Okonkwo lived in the Ibo tribe. He lived in his own Obi while his many wives lived in the their own huts. He was very fond of his tribe because Umuofia is an Igbo village with very well defined traditions. He wanted to be known as the greatest and also to rise in the chain of honor in the future. But, his dreams suddenly changed when he accidentally killed someone and was told to leave to live in exile for seven years.
