FC: The Boxer Rebellion

The Boxer Rebellion was a movement in China, started by the Righteous Harmony Society, which opposed Christianity. They had their reasons, but most of them stemmed from a fear of change.

They had several reasons for being upset at people from other nations Before then, people from other countries had brought in opium and started wars, invaded their system of politics with bribes and they manipulated the Chinese economy.

Several groups opposed all foreign contact, for fear that invaders would do more damage. Religious groups opposed Christianity, to prevent the loss of members to local religions. Incoming missionaries and Chinese Christians were massacred.

At many times, there was social unrest within China. Gangs roamed the streets, chanting "Kill the christians", and "Drive out the foreign devils". When the gangs attacked, citizens joined in the mobs. These additions made the public hard to ignore.

The Chinese Empress Dowage at the time was very hesitant to engage in warfare of any kind. After much bad advise from her council, and seeing the worst in the invaders, she declared war on all foreign powers.

When China declared war, several great powers rose up to oppose them. The great 8-nation alliance consisted of Japan, the UK, the US, Italy, Russia, France, Germany, and Austria Hungary. They all donated troops and warships to oppose China.

The Boxer Rebellion was started in November of 1898, as the Boxers grew more aggressive. Instead of just attacking missionaries and Christians, they began to attack any and all foreign visitors or invaders, forcing them to flee the country or go into hiding.

There were many battles fought during the war, but the three major battles were the Seymour Expedition, the Gaselee Expedition, and the Russian invasion of Manchuria

After long sets of battles, the war ended in 1901. It was a violent time. Many Boxers were executed after the war was over, as "reprimands".
