FC: henry river mill village

Huddled in the hills of North Carolina, there lies a ghost town called Henry River. Built in the early 1900's around a textile mill, the town peaked fast but fell quickly. In fact, it hardly made it past the 1960's. In it's time, however, Henry River was remarkable: The village generated it's own electricity, operated under it's own currency, ran it's own school and built it's own church, swam in it's own swimming hole and churned it's own moonshine. But the community that once thrived, now sits as empty as an unpaired shoe.

The vibrant community consisted of the textile mill and dam, company store, garage, baseball field, church, water reservoir, boarding house and 35 single family and duplex dwellings. These workers' cottages were leased at nominal fees.

When driving through Henry River Mill Village today, it's hard to imagine scores of children playing ball or swimming and fishing in the river. Can you picture men and women hanging out on the 'hill' after working the long, hard hours in the factory?

In 1912 a steel truss bridge was built across the river. It was reputed to be the highest bridge in the state . During the 1916 flood, this bridge was one of the few not destroyed. In 1960 a new concrete bridge was built replacing the steel truss bridge.

HENRY RIVER POEM 5 Nicknamed boys in overalls, Could be any mill hill In the black and white fifties, A place alive with baseball Afternoons, swimming or fishing In the "pool" above the dam. Everybody had a nickname Because baseball players And race car drivers all had one, And a boy needed one When he rode his bicycle Out Dogtrot and up the hill With his ragged ball glove On the handle bars Headed for the field. Tim Peeler

Henry River Mills Co. produced fine cotton yarn for the apparel industry. It was built in the early 1900's and operated until the late 1960's. Sadly, the cotton mill burned to the ground in 1977.

In May 2011 a major motion picture was partially filmed in Henry River The Hunger Games | by Lionsgate | release date : Spring 2012 | A Hunger Games movie set

HENRY RIVER REUNION In 2005 many of the former mill villagers gathered together and spun tales of the good times.
