FC: Affiliation “Individual commitment to a group effort - that is what makes a team work, a company work, a society work, a civilization work.” - Vince Lombardi

Essential Questions What is affiliation? What can I do to enrich the learning of my students by incorporating meaningful collaborative projects? How is learning about affiliation the same/different from learning a foreign language?

Definition of Affiliation: Standard 9 ~ students are provided opportunities to work with others (peers, parents, other adults, teachers, students from other schools and classrooms) on products, group performances and exhibitions that they and others judge to be of significance.” | Schlechty, Phillip C. (2011) Engaging Students: The Next Level of Working on the Work, pg. 61

Best Practices in Teaching a Foreign Language 1. The teacher sets high expectations for all students, designs assessment, and organizes instruction to engage and motivate all learners 2. The teacher and students communicate purposefully in the target language as listeners, speakers, readers, writers, and viewers. 3. There is more student activity than teacher activity in most lessons. Student activity includes student to student interactions, as well as teacher to student interactions. Students work independently, in pairs, and in groups. Students ask and answer questions and they create with language. 4. Students take risks as language learners because the learning environment is positive and supportive. The diverse learning styles of all students are considered in the teacher’s instructional planning. 5. The physical environment including displays of student work is instructional, motivational, and informative. 6. Students and teachers realize that the text is not the curriculum, but rather a tool to help teach the competencies in the curriculum. 7. Students and teachers use a variety of print and non-print materials including authentic target language sources. 8. Technology, as appropriate and available, is used by students and teachers to facilitate learning and teaching.

Culminating Activity Design Quality Dictionary Just as we learn a foreign language, there are terms we need to know about Design Qualities. In this activity, participants will work collaboratively to create a digital dictionary of the Design Qualities vocabulary for Creating Engaging Work. *Terms can be found in the text "Engaging Students: The Next Level of Working on the Work" by Phillip C. Schlechty (2011), pg 51. *Possible programs participants may use are: Powerpoint, Mixbook, Animoto, Storybird, StoryMaker, etc. *The dictionary must contain the terms,, a definition in one's own words, examples of practical application, and a visual (Illustrations or pictures), and published in a formal format.

“Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.” – Helen Keller

Summary: The Affiliation Quality is a design of choice. In group assignments, give students a role to play within the group that has value to that student, which in turn provides that student with a feeling of being a part of the group, a requirement for all participate, and gives intrinsic motivation to always do his/her best. | So Long, Farewell Song http://cli.ps/oA8br
