FC: "The Town of Friendly People"
1: The Town of St. George was named for its first settler, James George. His father, Dennis George, came to the colonies with Lafayette to assist the Colonies in the War of Independence.
2: Appleby Church was founded in 1797. The buildings simple design shows the influence of the architecture used in Congregationalist Churches of New England.
3: The Koger House is the oldest residence in Dorchester County. It was built for Joseph Koger, a member of the SC House of Representatives 1801-1812, and was once a Stagecoach Inn.
5: 61 Harmony Lodge was first chartered in 1842
6: Bishop William Capers preached the first sermon at theRailroad Chapel in 1847 | Saint George United Methodist Church 120 North Parler Avenue
7: Indian Field Campground was built in 1848 and has been a site for religious meetings for over 200 years.
8: South Carolina Canal and Rail Road Company Original Track Location Began first successful scheduled steam railroad service in America on December 25, 1830, and by 1833 its 136 miles from Charleston to Hamburg made it the world's longest railroad.
9: The historical Klauber Building was originally constructed in 1894 by Judge Leopold Klauber. He used the building for a mercantile store. The Building serves St. George today as the office of the Tri-County Regional Chamber of Commerce, The St. George Visitor Center, and the Town Museum.
10: The Eagle Record Established in 1899
11: The small but beautiful Lourie Theater was built in the 1920's. The original structure has been renovated over the years to preserve a reflection of that Era.
12: 1964 | 2009 | Dorchester County was named for Dorchester, Massachusetts. In 1696 Congregationalists from that town moved south and established the parish named St. George.

14: In 1944, John Wesley Weeks opened the doors of his family business: Weeks' Department Store
15: In 1985, the store manager of the St. George Piggly Wiggly was giving a broker of a large Grits company an order for grits. The broker made a remark that his company sure shipped a lot of grits into St. George. As it turned out, the people of St. George actually ate more grits per capita than any other place in the world! Thus the World's Grits Festival was born.
16: Francis Beidler Forest was originally established to preserve 1,800 acres of old-growth swamp forest, one of only tow stands still left in the state.

22: In February, 2010, 6-8 inches of snow covered The Town of St. George.
