Creating a beautiful holiday wreath to welcome your guests and ring in the season is easier than you might think. With the right supplies, a dash of creativity and a little bit of time, you'll have a simple, modern holiday wreath that brightens your front door.

How to Create a Modern Holiday Wreath

You can put together a magazine-worthy wreath for your front door in just a few simple steps. You'll need:

  • A large, metal or macramé hoop

  •  Metallic gold metal spray paint (optional)

  • Faux greenery

  • Green floral wire

  • Wire cutters

  • Hot glue gun

Pro tip: When you're choosing greenery, think seasonally. For fall, choose things like dusty miller, eucalyptus leaves or rosemary. For winter, choose pine, holly or mistletoe.

Follow these instructions to create a simple, elegant piece your guests will love:

  • Paint the hoop (if not already colored)

  • Cut your greenery

  • Attach the greenery

Here's a closer look at each step.

1. Spray Paint the Hoop

Spread out newspaper or a tarp and place the metal hoop in the center. Spray paint the hoop, paying special attention to the inner and outer sides of the ring. Let it dry completely. You can flip it over and paint the other side if you'd like, but it's not necessary - one side will hang against your door.

Check for patchy spots where you can see through the paint, or for areas you may have missed. Touch them up before you move on to the next step.

2. Cut Greenery

While you're waiting for the paint to dry, cut the greenery stems. Smaller pieces work best because they allow you to customize your wreath more. Large pieces can create imbalance in your design, so if you need more greenery, simply add more small pieces.

Wrap each greenery stem with a short piece of floral wire. You'll use the wire to affix the stems to the macramé hoop.

3. Put the Greenery on the Hoop

A little planning goes a long way. Lay out the greenery the way you want it to look on the hoop and snap a quick picture with your phone. Remove all the pieces and start attaching them to the hoop, one by one, until you've recreated the look in your photo. Attach the limbs to the hoop by wrapping the floral wire around it several times.

Pro tip: Use hot glue to secure the floral wire immediately after you place it. That way, the pieces won't move when you attach new ones. You can apply the glue to the back of the wreath to keep it out of sight, or you can apply it to the front to keep the back even and smooth.

Repeat for each piece of greenery until you love the way your wreath looks.

DIY holiday wreaths are a great way to give your guests a warm welcome when they stop by to celebrate. With the right greenery and a little time, you can create a wreath you'll be excited to use year after year.
